I created an airport. After using the flatten switch to ensure the terrain would be at the right height, I excluded all default objects from the area. I checked in FS2004, and no airport! Is the new airport still classed as a default object? I deleted the exclude switch and the airport reappeared, along with trees and autogen buildings. Any suggestions?  ???

I think what you may have done was to put the flatten switch in the wrong place. What I mean is when you made your airport and added it to your scenery it made a entry in your scenery cfg file. Usually it is the last entry in the file if you put the exclude switch in this line then you just erased what you did. Wht you need to to is to find the area the old airport is in and put the exclude in that area.
Example
(area 3)
local= scenery/neam
remote=0
If this is the area the old airport is in then put the exclude switch here
Do not put it in the same area as you new scenery is in 8)
