I have empathy with anyone wanting to work with CFS1. I have CFS2 & 3, as well as F595, 98 and '02: still prefer CFS1. It's simpler for someone with no prior operational computer training to tweak, change & create missions (this began with moving campaigns into the mission folder), redesign acft & texture objects, etc., from within the program itself: ergo, my own personal Air Forces with their own insignia but, alas, the acft themselves are still redesigns of the original CFS/ FS.
However, my personal gaming computer isn't connected online -- didn't know any of these websites existed until getting abacus add-ons last autumn and contacting them to inquire @ AF99. They told me I'd have to search elsewhere for a copy. I do have the issue @ sizing with most AF99 add-ons; you crash into an object when it seems you're still a mile from it.
The other related issue I have: I've just started working with some WWI files for CFS1. I'd like some scenery (family 4) biplanes. Although it's a lesser concern, I also should have the "bullet_hole" disabled: it may look a bit odd with mid-air bullet holes around an open-air cockpit.
Thus, if someone can provide alex9292002 and I with something equivelent to -- or better -- than AF99, it would be appreciated.

The only other alternative to AF99 was Aircraft Designer 2000 (AD2000) which had an FS98/CFS1 module. However, that, too, is out of print, and even it's later development AD2002 is not available.
It seems that there is little hope other than the bargain software...

I started with AF99 the day the service patch was available (be sure to ask Abacus if it is in the available copies or you will have to down load it separately). I do not remember this program fondly; the learning curve was very steep but IMHO not as bad as gmax. (Which is way I am still a FSDS junkie).
I was doing a Grumman F3F for FS98 when the AF99 lightbulb went off. The secret was you are one way or another going to enter the X,Y,Z coordinates for every point or corner of every polygon that is in the project. When I understood that I could plan ahead and write down and save coordinates. Also, you get married to the Point Editor. I wish you Good Luck! Cheers----Paul
