XFX GeForce FX 5200? (Read 0 times)

I just found out that my computer DOES have an AGP 8X slot on the motherboard, at first I didnt think it did. Anyway I am thinking about getting the XFX GeForce FX 5200 128 MB AGP video card. I was just wondering if this would be a good choice? I want to be able to get the cool water textures and reflections, is this card capable of doing that? I guess about anything would have to be better than the Geforce4 MX420 that it has now... Sad Shocked Grin

Yes it will do the reflections as it supports DX9.  Though it isn't a very good card IMO.

What is your budget?  Lets se if we can get you anything a little better.  I mean even a second hand GF4 ti4600 is better than the FX5200 and could probably be found for the same money.

If your mobo has AGP 8x, get a 6600 GT. No other card can match its performence for its price.

If have a bit more money, you can get a 6800 GT which takes a 5200 outside and pounds it...repeatly.

I have the 5200 and it works fine for now, the 6800 is $400-$600 right now on ebay, in 6 months it will be under $100, I think I'll wait a bit.

Agree with Paz, my 5200 is great, I strongly feels that certain graphic quaility is more dependant on your system as a whole and not just the card Wink
Think about it a $600 graphics card will run like a $100 or less card on a weak or poorly set up system Wink
Same as adding high octane gasoline to a 79 Mavrick won't see much improvement Grin

Yes the rest of his system could bottle neck a high end card.

I was summising that he didn't want to spedn much as he chose an FX5200 as a card.

Yes the GF4 Ti4600 (128mb) is older than the FX5200 but I can guarantee it will outperform it no problems.  Sure it doesn't fully support DX9 but neither does FS9 so that doesn't matter really.  When I had mine it was a great card, it even out performed my brothers FX5600 256mb card which he was a bit niggled about  Grin

So how much are we looking to spend on a card here then? give us a budget  Grin

Oher wise I would just tell everyone to get a 6800Ultra or a X800XT PE  Grin

Probably not over $100 so that pretty much leaves out the 6800...... Shocked

Im currently running a PCI 5200 and couldnt be happier.  Noticed a nice performance increase and not to mention nice refections for a change.  If i can ill track down one of my old screenshot posts from before and one of my recent sence the card and give you an idea Wink  Had it no more then 1/2 year and it cost almost an even $100.

If you can use an AGP card then use it.  The AGP port offers superior bandwidth over PCI port.  PCI cards are a last resort to those who dont have an AGP port.

How about one of these:

Pay a few more dollars and get 256meg on the card if you like!

I have heard that APGs are better and if you have a slot then get one.   My problem is all the computers i have had only have PCIs available.  But the principle is the same.

Here is a link to shots before the card...some 78 pages back Tongue

And here is a more recent one... Ive always had a jaggy problem with this system...Had nothing to do with the card Wink
