Ok. My brother installed some software a while ago and after that the PC just wouldn't boot. It was tracked down into being a corrupted AutoExec.bat... we tried the autoexec from a PC at work and failure again. I was fiddling with it last night, got it into safe mode, and then into 'proper' mode with the step thru thing, running all but the autoexec. For some reason I had to re-install my GFX drivers from my CD  Wink and now it all seems to work fine!! BUT - when I boot it always goes to the windows startup menu. I hit normal mode and its fine! How do i stop it showing that? Like  I said, its '98SE.
Thanks guys, Dan

Hi Dan...!

Have you tried inserting your Windows '98 SE disk and installing it again over your existing Windows...!
I often do it when things go slightly wonky... 8)...!
It often replaces missing or corrupted files!
It works fine with Win '98SE*.... Grin...!

Cheers Dan...!

Paul.

*Yet another good reason for retaining Windows '98SE... Wink... Grin...!

P.S.  A tip: after the installation you may have to re-install the latest DirectX file again, (DirectX9c).
Run "dxdiag" to check for it... Wink...!

Here's my fix for all win 98 problems:

Install a clean copy of XP. LOL

It probably has something to do with a command in the autoexec.bat forcing windows into the startup menu.

BTW, what kind of software did your brother install?

Hi Auto... Grin...!

I think Dan may be of the same opinion as myself...If I had £164 to throw at my computer I might purchase a copy of Uncle Bills' Windows XP, Professional or Home... Roll Eyes...!
At the moment our copy of Windows '98SE costs nuffin' and the occasional boredom can be relieved by sorting out various problems that (regularly) occur in Windows '98SE.... Grin...LOL...!

Windows '98SE runs most applications perfectly well, including the Flight Sims, and I reckon £164 might be better spent on a graphics card up-grade... 8)... Grin...!

....and...

You would not believe the problems which are generated after installing XP, in trying to get all your hardware/software bits and pieces to be recognised....(Windows XP up-grade read-me)...Its a nightmare... Cry...!

...so...

For me, it's good-old '98 for a while....what do you reckon, Dan... Wink... Grin...!

Cheers all...!

Paul.

P.S. As Auto mentioned, incorrect installing and un-installing various programs can cause corruption to the autoexec.bat and config.sys text files.
A re-installation of '98 will correct them.
