H1 racer replica
Finally getting around to tweaking and resizing my photos for posting here... many are poor quality (scanned prints, etc.) but at Airventure 2003 I got hold of a beautiful digital (Canon was loaning them out!), and took a few good ones. The disc with most of the in-flight stuff got trashed before I could dupe it (Nooooo!), but that's how it goes. Here's some shots of Jim Wright's absolutely jaw-dropping replica of Howard Hughes' incrediblt H1 racer.
...
The shot above really shows off the incredible polished surface and amazing metalwork. She was made of wood and aluminum, and flew about as fast as the original. Wright set a new Category C1d speed record with this plane in 2002 (304.47mph).
...
Above is shot of one of the gear legs; just about all of this was built from scratch over many thousands of hours of loving work...
...
Look at this... every fastener is aligned the same way! They didn't have to do it that way, but they did anyway. Everything is perfect! These pictures do not really capture the magnificent craft and sheer passion this plane embodied.
...
I didn't see the H1 fly that week, but I did wander over to the flight line one day just as Wright was coming back from a flight in his wonderful machine.  Sadly, this plane and its creator were lost in a (still unexplained) accident on the way home from Oshkosh that summer. He tried to make an emergency landing in Yellowstone Park, and it did not turn out well. He was killed, and this priceless treasure was destroyed.  Hope y'all enjoy having a look at this beauty...

And a poor shot of the plane taxiing.

Nice shots Rottydaddy. Shame about that H-1.

Here's a few tips for posting images. Use copy/paste for the path & file names to avoid typos. You can preview your topic before you post it to make sure everything is OK. If it still goes wrong or you miss something you can edit your topic to correct it. Most of my own posts are edited at least once. Wink

Yes, I'm better off typing once correctly than wrong two out of three times. Thanx.

You don't need to type anything. Copy the path from the webpage & the file names from the upload box. If I'm posting a topic with a lot of photos I do it all in Notepad first then simply paste it all into the topic in one go.

No, sir... I am the world's worst tpyist. See? I even used three fingers that time...
I learned about computers  by the immersion method (new job); that was about 5 yrs. ago; I'm sorta learning to swim, but I almost didn't get out of the bag before I drowned... Wink

That's convenient. I drove out from NJ for Airventure '03, but it was worth it!

Nice shots. It's demise was a (tragic) shame. I suppose you've posted them at an apt time, with the film Aviator being released... I was looking forward to seeing the H1 in it, but I think we have some camera trickery using the Vultee Valiant (as always) now...

I haven't seen that flick yet (I'm a sucker for any movie with airplanes; even bad ones). I'm surprised there wasn't a lot of CG footage. A Vultee? Poor substitute. I'm pretty sure that this film was planned while Wright and the H1 serial #2 were still around- they were planning to use it in the film.   Cry
