Believe there may have been a post on this before, but cannot find it now.  I have added some military aircraft (CC-130E & CF-18A/B) to some local airports (CYXD & CYOD) using AFCAD to designate parking spots.  At both airports, both types of aircraft have no gear - the '18s do have the wheels planted on the ground but are levitating above with no visible means of support, the Herc has no gear at all and just sits a few feet above ground.  Is there a way to edit/modify the aircraft, or am I out of luck - it appears there are no alternate aircraft available to use that feature CAF markings so hopefully something can be done to resolve this.

Regards, Brian

Hi Brian. This is a common problem with older 3rd party aircraft created with FSDS1, the only practical 3d modelling program for FS until some time after FS2002 was released. You didn't say which version of FS you have but these are the ones that are not fully compatible with FS9. Look for later designs created with FSDS2 or Gmax. These shouldn't have the problem.

I believe this is explained in more detail in the TTools instructions.

CAFedm, there should be a set of AI F-18's up here, if not at AVSIM for sure.

If you seach for O'Brien on AVSIM you will find my CAF AI package, it should have the AI planes in there.

Dave Friswell just released an AI C-130J and H model. It's pretty easy to repaint. Graham King of PAI military forums could have already done a few CAF models. Search for his name on AVSIM as well, he just uploaded a slew of skins

You will see a huge frame rate difference in these AI specific models compared to the FSDS1 models

Your tips helped a lot - only thing was, I spent all night trying to get the Mike Stone version of C-130 to show up in my AI traffic.  This was the only CAF variant I could find besides the earlier file that was used.  No matter what, it would not go.  Ended up using textures intended for Mike's version and added a C-130 file designed in FSDS, and optimized for use in FS2002 (which is what I am running).  A pic is attached below showing the results, am very happy with it!  Usually have no problems running FS9 aircraft files, except for this one time...

p.s. - the CF-18's are still awaiting proper replacement, will try the same trick with those.  It was rather funny to see them taxi at CYOD and then just flip over into the runway, never to be seen again! LOL Grin

Mike Stone's later aircraft should be ideal for AI traffic. I think he uses FSDS2. I know that RollerBall speaks very highly of them. The only explanation I can think of for your problem with his C-130 is that you're using one of his FS9 aircraft in FS2002. Aircraft created specifically for FS9 will not be fully compatible with FS2002 & most likely not work at all without conversion. This probably applies to the F-18 you mentioned.

PS. Many 3rd party player flyable aircraft do not perform too well as AI traffic without modifying the flight dynamics. This is a subject in its own right & some people specialise in it. The guys at PAI & our own RollerBall know far more about this than me.

I've downloaded a file called caf_ai from Avsim, believe this is the one which you had referred to above.  I would like to ask how to incorporate the AFCAD information contained therein, which consists of 11 .txt documents contained within the AFCAD folder - are these somehow added to AFCAD itself or copied into the scenery folder of FS2K2 for example?  Many thanks, I look forward to getting this operation up and running soon.

sorry Brian, I didn't realize you were running 2002 when I replied earlier.

The flight plans will work but the afcads won't. I'm not sure if there is a 2002 afcad CAF set out there or not. I have a military collection for 2002 up at AVSIM.

I'm not sure what's in it but you might find some CAF bases. It was all the military bases I could find for 2002 back then

Thanks for the info - I have a few days free here so will try my luck at adjusting a few bases playing with AFCAD from scratch.  Tis the best way to learn these things anyway, if everything works out OK then I'll offer my 2K2 version for those who may be able to use it.

Cheers - B

Brian, not sure if you had any luck with the AI C-130 but Graham King just did a CC-130 reskin for it.

Got the CC-130 going fine, thank you.  Also got the CF-18 and CT-155 for FS2002 set up here, everything works better than anticipated!  Here's a pic of some activity at CFB Cold Lake, the blue-grey thing is my own creation (the "Grizzly").  Thanks for everyone's help in getting my base operational!
