Just out of curiosity, why is the left wing on the BOB Spitfires always painted black?

In the very early war half the underside of all RAF fighters were painted black. I can only assume this was to act as an IFF for ground units.

During late fall 1940/winter 1941 RAF changed back to half black painted undersurfaces. Believe the original ID of Black and White undersurfaces was recognition by own AA-fire crews.
