Hey
Is CFS1 freeware now? I know it's not but im gonna ask anyways in hope. Because i have a new computer now and have actually lost the game, and it was a really great game, and i miss it.

I'll just have to buy the new CFS, is it as good as number 1 though?

cheers

CFS1 is not freeware but it's still available if you know where to look. If your local software store doesn't have it I'm sure you could find a copy on Ebay. As for the new CFS as you put it, CFS2 is excellent & many developers like me are still creating addons for it. I can't comment on CFS3 as it won't run any sense on my old machine, although I was unimpressed with what I saw when I tried it. While browsing in PC World last week I couldn't help noticing that CFS2 was still being sold at its original price of £34.99 while CFS3 had been reduced to £19.99. Roll Eyes

What machine are you running? (specs wise)

Because i heard that CFS3 runs quite well on less able ( Wink) computers. Because of the new engine.

Lol, i guess it's because you can't import aircraft from other sims to the game. That's what impressed me about CFS1, i imported many fs98 add ons into the game.

At PC World the other day, I picked up a 5-CD package including a couple of Helicopter sims I haven't flown yet, CFS1 and both a Cold War and Pacific-based CFS1 addon (very nice Corsair included) for the princely sum of £15 - that's £3 a game.

Bargain!

I think this would depend on the individual machine. Mine is a PIII 800, 512 Mb RAM + Voodoo5 5500 running on WinMe. I never really expected CFS3 to run well on it so can't say I was too upset when it didn't. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of FS9 on "old faithful". It will have to last me a bit longer yet.

You can still find it (in the U.K. anyway). Last time I saw it, it was £5.00.
The 2 newer versions are probably technically and visually better, but for sheer fun I still prefer CFS1 (I also play the IL2 series and still prefer CFS1 for fun).
After 3 years of playing I don't use any downloaded aircraft or scenery*, I just enjoy pitching myself against the decent pilots of the Ridge, and doing the occasional teaching for the new blood coming into the game as well.

* I have EURO's M.C.R. tool, RAF662 Gunsights, and The Ark Royal. But other than THAT I run the game as stock (lolol).

My experience is the exact opposite of Grizzly's. CFS1 was my first M$ sim. To be honest I didn't think much of it at all until I found the fledgling Simviation. It wasn't even called that when I first stumbled across it. I'd only been online for a few weeks & didn't know my way around. I soon learned how to convert FS98 aircraft to work in CFS1 & never looked back. This is the attraction of CFS & FS for me. You can make it exactly as you want it. I've never played online as it never appealed to me. Depends what floats your boat. Wink

Oh yeh, there's nothing wrong with add-on's if that's what floats your (grrr.., now ya got me saying it!  Tongue lol)
I enjoy finding ways of playing the game better with the equipment that came with it.
The only reason I put those add-on's in are that they don't affect the running of the game;

The gunsights allow me to see the target, the M$ one is so big it's distracting.

The MCR records the in-game messages and can be set-up to prevent the cheaters from using auto-follow (thank you EURO lolol) and,

Nelo's Ark Royal allowed me to do carrier landings with my squad (although I no longer fly squad missions so now I don't have all the carrier aircraft any more. I could delete the Ark now I suppose).

It's just about the skills and tactics of the dogfight for me. And hunney. Bare's gotta have hunney.
