Hi all,

I fancied trying to find some really cool mountain landing strips - the sort that 'bush flyers' would use to get too (otherwise) in-accessable areas.

Does anybody have any particular favourites that they like to try to land (or in my case - crash) at???

I'm sure there must be some that are 'hard as nails' to land at, & any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

One of my favourite flights is between Anvik and Grayling, Alaska - it's about a 10-minute hop to the west. Not much in the way of mountains but there is plenty of rugged terrain to deal with. Always fly the DHC-4 Caribou here, even with it's excellent STOL capability I only manage to make 1 out of 4 landings, due to the very short unprepared strip at Grayling, plus it's location (atop a ledge at the edge of the waterline). Recommend it if you are looking for a challenge!

Thanks CAFedm, i tried the hop from Anvik to Grayling & was very impressed - nice landing strip, right next to the water & quite a challenge (although I used the Cessna 172 so i may have cheated a little bit). Wink

I got shown the USS Carl Vinson off the coast of Hawaii the other day 8), which is an amazing challenge too land on. Its located 32nm from PHOG on a bearing of 194 if anybody wants too try it.

(You can also go 'below decks' to re-fuel - ace).

Let me know how you get on if you try it!!!

Hey buddy here's a strip you will abosuletely LOVE:

4s2 Hood River. They got the hoot mountain, hood river, and its in oregen. Gets your cessna up, download mesh, and enjoy. It's lovely down there.

Thanks for the suggestion of 4s2.

I have just a had a brief look around the airfield & it looks like i'm gonna be able to have a lot of fun there, the very first airfield i flew to was 7OR6 (3nm away) which is located on the side of a hill with some very steep drops around the (grass) runway - fantastic fun, trying to land at 60kias & avoid the surronding hills & trees!! brilliant. Tongue

Unfortunately i'm a bit pushed for time at the moment Embarrassed

, but i'm really looking forward to doing some flights around the 4s2 area.

Valdez Alaska is right on the coast, with mountains containing all kinds of little ravines and vallies to fly in. Also, try Telluride, Colorado. The approach from the west is a blast.

Due to a FS2002 terrain mesh glitch, CYBA, Banff, BC, can be interesting in anything bigger than a Baron.

2AK7, Bald Mountain, Talkneeta, Alaska, real great Airport, or better said strip, just on top of a small Mountain, real great area, there are some other small airfields near it, check it out, it´s great. And try it with weather set to the worst, and at night.....

Thankyou all for your replies,

I have been a pushed for time (again!!), but have managed too get a few brief flights into & around the airfields suggested.

CYBA (suggested by DAve3cu):

Thankyou Dave for this one, i found that the HUGE wholes surrounding the runway made it very difficult for taxi-ing & parking. Also the view you get whilst coming in too land is amazing - that massive drop, wow!!!

2AK7 (suggested by Mr Mugel):

Thankyou Mr Mugel, another fantastic landing strip, i'd love too know where your supposed to go once you've got there - abseiling i guess!!

VNLK (suggested by Zeberdee):

I think this one is my favourite of all the suggestions i've had so far - the landing strip is fantastically set into a cove on the side of a mountain & there are so many ways you can try too line up for it - through the valley & then HARD RIGHT AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! or clip the mountain tops & dive straight in, brilliant fun. A very big thankyou to Zeberdee & perhaps a 'standing ovation' maybe.

VALDEZ, ALASKA (suggested by Dread Pirate Roberts):

Thankyou 'Pirate', another brilliant airstrip in a lovely part of the world, I love flying around Alaska as i find it both very nice to look at & very challenging to fly, I am looking forward too setting up some flights around this area & having a good 'nose' around.

You can just fly in the direction of the runway, than you´ll see 2 Airports, not far away. Just fly a short time just straight out, maybe a little to the left hand side.

And it´s great in a Winter evening, just before the sun goes down.
