In need of some tweaking advise... (Read 1485 times)

After taking a good look at my systems specs i came to a conclusion something is not right.  There are people runing FS2004 on computers slower then mine and I can barely run FS2002 at a decent quality Sad  Im not sure as to what settings might need changing but it is currently running at 1467 mghz, 512 DDR ram, 128 mb GeForce FX 5200 graphics card, and Win 98SE.  I can manage a constant 25 fps in the air, but while on the ground i get more like 10 to 12 at small airports and 7 to 8 at larger like atlanta.  This is with no or maby one AI aircraft at the airport.  With more then 2 AI on the ground it drops me to 4 or 5 FPS Undecided   Also graphic settings in 02 are set at about medium.  I know i sould be getting much more performance then i am.  So any advise on how to solve the problem would be greatly apriciated Wink

ah but that would mean locating and buying a $125 disk that my cash flow would not allow Tongue  If anything XP would slow it down i would think.  98SE runs everything and i dont see why a new op system with even more requirments could make an improvment ???

Well its down to the way the sofftware works!

If you think like that why did you buy FS2004?  You would be fine running FS2000 wouldn't you? same scenario with the OS.  Things get better and work better (Well usually  Wink)

well a few months ago i did try 2004 but returned it after only getting fps of 2-3 no matter where i was.  2002 seems to run fine just not as well as i have seen with people who have similar systems be they XP or 98.  dont know what might cause it but i have tried all i know Embarrassed

My g/friend only has a GF3 ti200 (64meg) graphics card and a 1333MHz athlon CPU and 512ddr PC2100 (266Mhz) ram.

Admittingley it can not run max settings but FS2004 will run just fine on that system!  I think its more likely somthing is playing up on your system than it purely being FS2004.

Well as i have mentioned before.  Im running FS2002 and get that fps problem with even modified AI aircraft "FS Painters" models that i fly.  i cant fly anything but or i spend forever just rolling down the runway.  I think its probably something in eather FS or my computer that i need to tweak but i dont know what.  If anyone with a similar system can post some of there settings that might help.  mine are currently about half in FS and my graphics card is to full performance ???

Windows 98 is old, and by XP's standards, unstable.

Software is optimised for XP. Get over it  Tongue  Grin

You won't need a new hard drive, just back up what you wish to save, re-format and install Xp on your existing drive.
Alternatively, partition your existing drive, and have XP on the other partition, keeping '98 happy.

I have a 384MB pIII 667, it won't run FS9 under '98 at anything other than a crawl (4 - 9 fps!), with XP installed, it happily runs FS9 (average 22 fps) albeit at low settings. Its perfectly playable.  Smiley

Thats using an ancient Geforce2 GTS 3D card!

3rd Party painters models can cause frame rate issues, usually, the textures are larger than stock planes, hence slowdown, sometimes even on high end kit.  Roll Eyes

OK OK OK I'M CONVINCED Tongue Roll Eyes

If i can locate an XP disk for a "REASONABLE" price then i might pick it up.  I guess i hate XP for the fact i was completely raised on 95 and 98.  XP and mac systems we use at my vocational class just seem weird to me.  But thats mac and at least XP is not as bad.  But unless i find a disk thats under 100 bucks it probly wont happen for awhile.  i just cant afford it at this moment otherwise.  But i will be in town tommarow and will be on the look out for one.  as for now im off to bed seems though its nearing midnight Tongue

Don't worry mate, you can set XP up so it looks just like '98 - as I have mine set! - the interface looks the same, the experience is sooo much better!  Wink

Slap me if you install XP and disagree, frankly I'd be staggered if you did'nt spot the improvements.

Not to mention the likes of Doom3 won't run under '98 Sad

Well...Im going to get XP later today.  I had a little extra cash on my check this week and decided to use it for the disk.  So hopefully all goes well and things will improve...If not then its obviously something with the system itself.  Shall find out in a few hours Wink
