I haven't set foot in the Photos forum since the last air display in early October. Apologies if I've missed any nice photos in other topics.

I thought you might like to see what my little part of the world looks like in the middle of Autumn. I took these last Saturday afternoon out in the country a few miles north of where I live.

The River Arun just outside the little village of Rackham.




The gently rolling South Downs - looking east from Bury Hill across the valley to Kithurst Hill in the distance. It's the nearest thing to a mountain around here. I used to spend a lot of time up there flying my R/C slope soarers. The Southdown Gliding Club field is just out of shot to the left & full sized sailplanes also use the hill for ridge soaring. I must go up there & take some shots sometime.


Further down the River Arun to the Black Rabbit at Arundel. Looks beautiful in the early evening sunlight. The pub is hidden behind the trees.

Everyone says our rivers look muddy. I hadn't noticed it myself but I suppose I'm used to how they look. It might be a trick of the light & reflections more than anything else. The water level was high when I took these shots. It's never as clear as in photos I've seen of rivers in your part of the world.  You will see for yourself soon.

Very nice! I wish I lived in a place where the scenery changed in Autumn... The scenery and weather in my area is about as pleasant as stepping on a rusty nail.

A large part of the South Downs & other areas of outstanding beauty are owned & protected by the National Trust which has very strict rules. Even before the current furore over foxhunting it was not allowed on NT land. The Crown obviously owns a lot of land but I'm not sure the general public is welcome or allowed to rent it. The MoD is probably the biggest landowner in this country. Some MoD land can be used for other purposes, such as model flying & similar pastimes.

Looking good..

We do have crown land ....... its the estates owned by the Queen such as Sandringham ... also any Government buildings. But the most unusual crown land is between , if im thinking rightly, the high and low water marks on any tidal areas.

Excellent site...will have to read a little more about it.
