Hey,
Does anyone here know if the ATC in FS2002 is smart enuf to avoid collisions with mountains, tall buildings etc.??

Anyone had any bad experinces with the ATC?  The only time the ATC screwd up for me was when I was on final for Auckland after a LONG flight from Dubai. Just as i was on final, out pops a Cessna Skyhawk. I had to veer off course and i was cursing the f**king ATC. I had to a go around and do the whole approch pattern again with only 8% of fuel left. Boy was it scary. I am doing a final check before landing. I look up at my screen and see a freaking Cessna.

Just imagine tht scenario in real life (although its virtually impossible)......

Any replies would be appreciated....

FS ATC is so amazingly stupid that it will tell you to join a circuit one way while other traffic is going the other way.

Complete rubbish.

I have to say the only place I would say that FS ATC is realistic would be over France and Spain in the summer holiday season. I thought I had a near miss there, but another aircraft flew between us so I'm not sure Grin Grin Grin

Yeah, I am the role of ATC on Akroma Server and the only time floris (other ATC) and I screwed up was when we were controlling at PAHN with mountains on the left of runway 8. I thought it was a left standard pattern for 8 when it was actually for 26.. Poor Piper... Grin

Hmm, I don't know about fs2002, but I did a flight to denver the other day and ATC gave me a descent order to 14,500 and as I approached smacking in the mountains (I would have pulled up myself) they ordered me up to 17,000.  So at least in 2k4 they are aware of terrain heights and won't let you just go smack into the side of a mountain.

Ahhh, the horrible ATC.  They sometimes dont even know how to navigate the mountains... I forget where it was but at one point I was in a A340-600 on ILS aproch...They told me to decend to 2000 feet.  Soon after I look up to see a nice 4000+ tall mountain within a few thousand feet.  Even pulling up didnt help, it was to late Undecided

I think even having ATC in FS was a very good thing. I suggest you put up or shut up about how "bad" the FS ATC is! I'd like to see you guys program better!

Pfft, were you on an IFR flight plan?  If not, ATC is not required to give you advisories like that(even when you ARE on an IFR flight plane they're not required to give you advisories like that).  You shouldn't have been flying an airbus near the buildings anyway, they won't move for it! If you don't know anything about real world ATC, don't make assumptions.

I agree with the guys complimenting the programers.  I am also getting a good laugh reading about the problems some people have had.  This should be a regular topic discussion "How ATC ruined the flight."  HAHA

Hehe, Grin, this is a good topic. I got so frustrated with it that I just never use the ATC directed ILS approaches any more.

My first experience was making a simple flight from San Diego (Lindberg Field) to John Wayne airport in Orange county- about a 25 minute flight.

Slammed me right into the side of a mountain- invisible on a moonless overcast night- about 10 miles east of the airport.

Whats funny is even if you see an obstacle coming and successfully avoid it, the ATCer loses patience with your tardiness in following the last instruction and discontinues directing your flight.

This ATC snit can be avoided by repeatedly asking the ATC to repeat the last instruction until you are clear of the mountain/building/whatever and back on track.

I confess that I almost never use the ATC controlled ILS flights anymore- although I do still use the ILS aproaches- but I get myself into the glide path on my own.

Plus, after getting FSNav early on, I am getting pretty adept at choosing safe waypoints for approaches in mountainous areas like the Rocky Mountains- one trick is to program waypoints along rivers when possible during final decent and approach.

ATC controlled ILS aproaches can be quite accident free though, especially in relatively flat areas- like the low atolls and such of the South Pacific- and the Sahara Desert, too! Hehe! Watch out for intermittent sand dunes though!

Cheers,
Chris

I usually don´t fly big jets, so i mostly fly without ATC or VFR, and it´s not too bad, there i think, but i think that´s because I don´t care about many things they say, I care for he RWY Number, and if I´m allowed to do sth.
But what I wonder about, is how you can operate ATC with Helicopters, once in real I heard an Heli chat on ATC, so they´ll have to do, too.

i finally have to thank the ATC even though it is very stupid. Shocked Shocked I was on approach with a CX 777-300 after a  usual flight between Hong Kong and San Francisco. I was doing my final procedures and just before the short final i suddenly spotted an A340-300  taxiing out to the runway. It was almost completely on the runway and i was "thanking" the ATC for a wonderful job of letting me crash.  i was about 64.5 feet of the ground and i was in complete shock for about a second becuz the next second atc told me to do a go around. i fortuneately pulled up just in time. even though i found the ATC quite stupid in FS2k2 i must admit it saved my long flight from a complete disaster. Cheesy Cheesy

PS: i couldn't get any screenshots becuz i was sweating like s**t from head to toe.

Ok Nexus, what I mean is that in VFR conditions you're not going to hear "Umm, airbus 13, there's a giant building at your 11 0'clock, report it in sight"

Note how I said ATC DOES provide seperation between you and terrain objects.  Normally.  Sometimes. There have been a few cases where aircraft, under IFR, have slammed into the side of a mountian. just read about a hawker that did that departing, umm, LA i think it was (may have been further north-think it was actually) and he went right into the side of a mountain.  Just a few days ago, a kingair on approach not equipped with a TCAS(I think that's it; if it's not then it wasn't equipped with whatever the terrain avoidance system thing is) crashed when it got too low and fell into trees.  Not that I'd ever question your expertise o Nexus, but seriously ther's no way ATC provides seperation between you and buildings like it was a traffic advisory. Why?  First is actually if you're under vfr there's no chance in hell, and second is you wouldn't be anywhere close to tall buildings in the first place.

btw, im not just runnin my mouth here i just had a 4 hour ground and it was all about ATC and flight planning.

Beefhole, take a minute and ask yourself
How often does an Airbus fly VFR?

You got knowledge, but learn to use it Wink

Oh btw, the "Traffic thingee" is TCAS (Traffic and Collision avoidance system), GPWS is the ground Proximity Warning System and that would've saved that King Air  Wink

He said he was "testing" it.  How many simmers go under IFR to test out a brand new plane they've just dled?  I sure as hell don't.  See, I use my brain occasionally.  Grin

Btw, thanks, I knew the collision avoidance system part, I just forgot wether the T stood for traffic or terrain.  Tongue

What kind of King AIr was it?
Because if that aircraft had 10 seats or more it MUST have an approved GPWS system, according to the FARs, and AFAIK, King Airs do have more than 10 seats, don't they?

Not sure, my dad was telling me about it and he's not "one of us", so maybe he got it wrong but I believe this was the plane carrying the owner of that NASCAR team, it was a pretty big story it could probably be looked up real fast. And I think they said this aircraft was scheduled to get a GPWS, it just hadn't recieved it yet.

But I definitely didn't make up the story just to one-up you, no...  Roll Eyes don't make eye contact beef... keep it together...  Grin
