Hello Everyone.

I served in the RAF for 13 years and I am looking for pics/images of RAF Phantoms (camo or grey) from around the late 70's. Particularly from 92 Sqn.

I've found a few on the 'wonderfully-wobbly-way'.

I served with this Squadron for 2 years at RAF(G) Wildenrath.

As a side tale I was also given a going-away-present while the Squadron was on APC at RAF Akrotiri in 1978, a back seat flight in a Phantom! I will never forget that as long as I live!

One point five hours of batting around the eastern Med frightening the crap out of the Israeli controllers and everyone else while we played tag with another Phantom. We were controlled at all times by the Mount Olympus radar ... of course ... (unofficially ... 'yeah, sure...')

I even had a clutch of the a/c, AND I was only an SAC at the time ... amazing!

One particular guy I remember from 92 Squadron was Steve Watkins. The call of 'WATKEEEEEENS' was often heard across the revetments at Wildenrath when he had cocked up something. I briefly re-met him at RAF Halford for the GST1 course around 1981 then never saw him again ... pity.

One other 'thing' I remember was a pilot who wrote a book called 'F4 Phantom - A Pilots Story'. I cannot for the life of me remember his name. I THINK it was Bob Brown but I'm not sure, he was very black and very tall.

Anyway, he penned the best description I have EVER read of in-flight refuelling (RAF basket-style).

It was this ... "In-flight refuelling, it's sort of like taking a running f##k at a rolling doughnut...".

Brilliant!, brings the image instantly to your mind!

To anyone who was with 92 Squadron in the late 70's, you should know what 'DDGC' means ( I still have the original 'bent phantom' drawing that was on the wall in the Mally Club, and more importantly, on our red sweatshirts!) ... and ... who WAS Chuggy? ... what sort of 'bap' was served on 'Q' site in Cyprus for breakfast? ... Who did the art on the wall in Deci, Sardinia ... How many cold beers DID that USAF U2 pilot REALLY chug down when he landed?? ... Who was 'Bam-Bam' on 92 (Ace guy but no brain!)?

...and finally, do you know what GST means?

Answer all these, or even ONE of them, and you are my friend forever.

Sorry if I sound 'weird' but I have been searching for a long time for this sort of stuff.

Thanks to all who reply to the following email address.
Dave Brynolf.
AKA on 92 Sqn as 'GROG'.
