A small update on the Spitfire project,
The gunsight mounted ( this was taken before i had received the Beamsplitter glass)
This is the frame for the pilots B/P winscreen, this is fabricated from 19 parts, unlike the original which was a casting

I will be using Rowans BoB to run in the sim, as this is open source code it has all the potential needed to run the spitfire cockpit. I know there were no MkV's in the BoB but you have to take what information you can get, and with the news that a new version of BoB is in the making from the BDG group, things can only get better.

Another space on the instrument panel has been filled, i mounted the altimeter to the BFP this morning, there are still some spaces to fill in, but it's getting there.

Below is the modification used to drive the artifical horizon via two servos. it has been tested and works well

A progress update on the AH mod, here are a couple of short movies of the AH working.

The first movie is start up, the air supply being turned on and the AH centering its self
http://www.simhardware.org//img/AH_movie_startup.wmv

The second movie shows the AH being rotated past the stops

Apart from being a scary, very gothic etcho film (whic is also very cool) I was amazed! That lil gauge hasnt been used in YEARS! It was cool to see it resurrected like that, almost as if it had just been hibernating....
very The Others ish, like a ghost...sort of...in a "Oh my, there are people walking around in period uniform shadows in that control tower!"-esque way.

I have re worked the old gunsight and have cut and mounted the beamsplitter refelector glass and altered the light unit to give the correct image colour. With these problems sorted out i will re make a new gunsight to look a little more realistic .

Hi John,
the gunsight was more of a " can i make this and get it to work" project. Compaired to the real early type gunsight it's not that convincing to look at. Now i know it can be done and i have better detail photos i hope the new one will look better.
Thanks for the kind words though  Smiley

Hi John,
i have often thought about doing just that, but with the simulator it's a great deal cheaper to fly. No problems with inspections, engine overhauls, take off and landing fees and no worries about storage  Grin.
I would like to get involved with restoration work though, now the kids have grown up.

A small update on the new build pilots seat. All the hard stuff is now complete, all thats required now is to add the rest of the fittings and then make the sutton harness and the seat back cushion.

Dave,

Every time you post new pictures I am totally amazed.  One would swear that you found an old WWII warehouse and it was stuffed with old (but brand new) aircraft parts.

Keep the great stuff coming.  But at some point soon please try to start a new thread as a "part two" type thing or something so that you don't go over the 500K limit of photos per thread.  It is easy to do...... I certainly know that I went over in some of my early threads before I realized that there was the 500K total limit in addition to the 100 K per picture limit.

Wow Dave.... your craftsmanship is truly amazing.  I assume that you have detailed plans you found for each component?  Or did you cobble them up from some basic photos and drawings?

best,

...................john

Hi John,
most of the original stuff was made by scaling up photos, but i did receive some great help from the guys doing the Y2K project, they are  building a spitfire from the ground up to flying condition. Along with the help from them, and purchasing some drawings from another company. i am now working my way back through some of the parts that were guessed.
No problem with the new thread, will have to start Part three.
Thanks for the kind words.

Hi Dave,
the cockpit is almost ready to be skinned, though at the moment i am in the process of re working some items. The force feed back system for the flight controls is being sorted out, and think we will use an electrical system. Hydraulics are the easiest route, but the risk of having a major leak in the house is the main factor in not using that option, besides the fact my wife wouldn't be over the moon about that either  Grin.

Building the cockpit section is the easy part, the hard part of the project is getting the cockpit integrated and talking to the flight sim data. The cockpit should be complete early next year build wise, and flying a little later in the year.
Hope that answers some of the questions.
Thanks for the interest and the kind words.

Cheers,
Dave

Hi bob576,
The servos used for the AH mod were
HiTec HS-81 and HiTec HS-625MG.
The lager servo being used for the roll the other for pitch.

Hello Bob,
Yes, i used to fly RC untill a few years ago, Last few models i made were scratch built gas turbine powered. 1/9 scale F-15, the last model i made was the F- 16 to the same scale. I could post a couple of photos if your interested.

Regards,
Dave

that would be great.
Although I dont quite have the thumbs or the money for a tubine yet, I have helped a friend build his turbine heli which is soon to be put into a Commanche fuselage, it will currently be the ONLY turbine Commanche in the US and only the 2nd in the world. I will also be helping him with his turbine powered, 8 foot long, Chinhook which will be the only one in existance.
IF you pm me your email address ill send you some pics of me flyin the good ol shockflyer (this way i dont take up you pic space in the thread). not sure if you have ever heard of these things but it is unbelieveable what you can do with these planes.

BTW, you simpit is amazing
