Would anyone care to start a group and fly once a week? Personally, for the last couple of weeks I've been having a room on ther Zone labeled for Simviation Members, but have had no real bites. It would be great to be able to get together one evening per week and fly for an hour or so...

DPR,
The idea of a real SimV flight server has been on my mind for quite a while. I imagine that setting up and running a dedicated one is about as big an overall project as the rest of SimV is.....so read that as "expensive".....and threfore unlikely.
I tend to fly online on the WSPilots FSHost flight server. I started out first with fs2002 trying "the Zone".... but had very poor luck connectinng to ANYTHING on there. Ditto on fs2004. All the FSHost based flight server sites seem far easier to connect to...at least for me.
What timeframe (GMT) were you thinking?

JB, it might not be that bad. If you wanted a true dedicated set up, you'd of course have to have a computer set aside for just that part of the system, but you could probably make due with leaving your computer on and just setting it up as an IP game.
Same for voice, if so interested.

I don't care WHEN we do it, just so long as we can get something set up that people feel comfortable with and has a regular time...
I've never tried FS Host, but I have never had a problem on the Zone, though I have heard many people say they have. I think I'll check out FS Host.

Yeah I definitely don't recommend the zone. IP games are the way to go, IMO.

So the main questions we need to address are:
What: Which host do we use. It would seem FSHost solves that...
Where: Who is going to host it. I think I could handle that once a week...
When: When do we get together? I think Sunday Mornings would be good for me, but I'm open to other suggestions...
Anyone up for that?

Hyperion,
What I meant above was more of a permanent SimV flight server....24 hour 7 day/week setup. Like the WSPilots setup.... but specifically for SimV. Leaving a "general use machine" connected to the net with open ports and sensitive information on it is just ASKING for problems
.
That approach would need a dedicated server and a dedicated DSL /broadband line. Lots of bucks for hardware and also monthly.
Not to mention the problems that come with hosting such stuff ................ which if you go to the WSPilots server and check out DS20LA's comments (the host) in the various forum threads ......... clearly becomes a pain in the butt.
DPR... if I know enough in advance .... Sunday mornings are possible at least for now. But aren't you in the UK? This international issue is one of the difficulties in setting this up..... people in different time zones. We should all talk in GMT... so we know what we are talking about no matter where we live.
It would be nice if we could publicise a "SimV Fly In". But if we get too many people........ we'll need live ATC too
.
best,
...............john

...the trouble I always find, is that when I want to chuff around quietly, admiring the scenery and dropping off in private grass airstrips, etc, in my Cessna 152, everyone else is wanting to blast around the skies at 40,000 ft, at Mach 2, in Hellfire missile machines...

It would be nice to have dedicated groups of flyers for different types of aircraft....
That way we could keep up with each other...

Fozzer,
I don't think you have to have them separate. Seems to me I have seen fs2002 and fs2004 folks flying together on a FSHost based server. But I could be wrong about that.
As to choice of aircraft........
I'm happy either in a small single engine prop...or up to a four engine commercial aviation craft....although haven't tackled the 747 yet really. Depends on what the "job" is
. I don't really fly "military" stuff... although have an A-10 Warthog that I very rarely take up.
I think for gathering the most people..... everyone SHOULD be able to handle a single engine prop.
And DPR....... don't know how I thought you were in the UK. Sorry.
best,

So let's see here about "tying down" some more details of this first single flight possibility. If we can get it to work once... then maybe it happens on a more regular basis.
My first thought here is for DPR.......
If you are going to "host" this... you'll need to spend some time setting up the FSHost software on your machine... and then you'll need to test it to get it working. I'd guess this is going to take some real effort. Sorry I can't help..... I know NOTHING about this setup stuff.
Realworld Timeframe: Sunday "morning" (in the USA) ......... what exact time?
Hosting Server: IP game with DPR running FSHost as the "server". Do we run default ports open?
Weather: I'd suggest real time Jeppesen weather on update format.
Simulation Timeframe: I think we should pick an exact time of day.... synchronize our watches so to speak..... so that everyone is flying in the same lighting conditions.
Communications: Default sim chat... or do we try to use Teamspeak? If we use Teamspeak... can we use an existing teamspeak server somewhere?
Aircraft Type: How about the first event is for a single specific aircraft? So everyone is flying the same one as to speed and range and so on.
Departure Airport: I think "low and slow" is the place to start. So a LARGE airport that is located near some good (default) VFR scenery (within 1/2 hour flight time) would be the place to start. Alaska or Jackson Hole, Wyoming, comes to my mind..... but of course I am from the USA.
A large airport will allow people to "pop up" in the multiplayer simulation at distruibuted locations... instead of all popping up on top of each other and having to sort out THAT mess without ATC. Maybe we should pre-assign strarting gates/ramps/locations? upon landing....people can just easily taxi out of the way.
Suggestions?
Arrival Airport: I think this should be within about a 50- 70 minute flight range from the departure airport. That would keep the overall session to about 1 1/2 to 2 hours....... allowing for taxiing....any go-arounds.... and getting everyone on the ground again.
Feel free to add to this above list.
This is just what I thought of as "issues" that need to be planned out.
best,
...................john

oldhorse,
Thanks for the suggestion. You do have a point.
I just went to the link you gave above ...... and unfortunately it is loaded with pop-up ads. And it says to join....go the messages forum. But nowhere on the page is there a link I could find to the messages forum. I clicked every hotlink on the page... and no place could I "join".
Maybe the site is underutilized....because of the ads and the difficulty in finding the "sign up" function
.
I am not sure how a site would feel about a group from ANOTHER site descending "enmasse" upon that site to hold a "members" event. Not to mention about how SimV would feel about having us do so.
SO it is a good idea... but we have to think about it a bit, I guess.

I agree it might be a bit rude to hijack someone elses site, so I think we might have to do our own. At least then, we'll have our own headaches and no one elses.
I don't mind running to host program, just give me a week to learn the software and how to set it up.
I hope we can keep this informal. Something less rigid than a squadron or VA. I rather just figured a bunch of friends might get together once a week and then figure what we were going to do.
I also think we should fly whatever we want. If we all try to fly the same plane, it'll be a pain deciding which one and if we fly all default planes, we are denying ourselves half of our hobby. I don't know about you guys, but I have quite a few planes and in most cases, I don't get fooled by FS switching planes on me.
Most of all, ket's just follow the KISS rule; that is Keep It Simple Stupid...
Again, I'm open for the time. I just suggested Sunday morning because it's a nice relaxed quiet time. Personally, I am free from about 10:00 AM to 12:00 while the wife and kids go to church. Being the Godless heathen I am, I get to stay home to uneind and prepare for the next week.

DPR,
Yeah... I didn't want to formally "hijack" a site either... that's why I brought it up
.
As to simple.... yup....no VA or Squadron for me either.
I hope to be on the WSPilots server online flying tonight (Sunday 10/23/04) after about 7:30 PM Eastern. It is at 66.147.177.125 for the IP address. If you get a chance....log in. My aircraft registration# is N100JB. I'll probably be flying on hop #11.....KEGE to somewhere about 1 hour away.
If you logon....... make sure the appropriate ports are set open both in the sim and on your firewall/ router.

DPR,
Great flying with you tonight!! My De Havilland Beaver is slow.... but reliable.
That approach into Teluride was really nice. I took it further down valley on the downwind than you did........ wanted to have plenty of time to line up with the xwind
. Novice pilot
.
One gust at about 500 f AGL kicked me all around to heck. I watched airspeed go from 60K to 100 K to 40 K in about 2 sec.
And that darn building in the middle of the runway just past the numbers was a surprise even though we had the prior "radio" contacts telling us it was there. I am not sure how much height I gave it. Were you in a position to see how much clearnace I actually had? Depth perception in the sim is limited.
Anyway........ this evening was maybe a prelude to a SimV fly in or something.

I hope that it was; I also enjoyed it. That was one of the most fun approaches I have done in a while. I loved coming around the side of that cliff and not seeing the airport until I was in the canyon.
I wasn't too thrilled with the concept of the hop. As I uinderstand it, you get bragging rights for how many you do? I'd rather just get together and do a bit of flying. But then again, had it not been a hop, we wouldn't have had that particular flight...
I hope we can do it again soon.

Jared,
Thanks for the "altitude" update. I knew I didn't give it very much. I didn't want to pull the nose up....cause I was too close to stall speed and the gusts could have made a mess for me.
One wonders if the M$ developemnt folks actually checked out most of the airprots before they released the product. I found one with light poles running thru the runway once.

DPR,
The "hop list" is a series that the server host has set up. There's like 990 flights on the list. I suppose that some use it for "bragging rights".... but that is not how I look at it.
For me, it has resulted in flying places (like we just did) that I would not otherwise likely visit. The one you followed me on was hop #11. Back about hop #9ish there was a blind approach down a canyon with a major turn right before you had to hug the downslope of a hill to put it on the short grass runway with the mountain at the other end. I did a couple of flybys figuring out how to land on that one.
Many times I log on there and just fly wherever I feel like it. And sometimes ....usually on Saturday nights ....... they run a specific ATC flight. Origination and destination airports is specified in advance.....we all use Teamspeak to communicate via audio. Back when the hurricanes were in the Florida area... we did a couple flights from places like the Caman Islands into Jacksonville and Miami in "only heavies".
Anyway....... now I know that I cut the roof of that building close!

Jared,
Thanks for the "altitude" update. I knew I didn't give it very much. I didn't want to pull the nose up....cause I was too close to stall speed and the gusts could have made a mess for me.
One wonders if the M$ developemnt folks actually checked out most of the airprots before they released the product. I found one with light poles running thru the runway once.
best,
.................john
Yep, I understand your concern, those winds were a little tricky especially on landing.
It's one thing to have a building on the end of the runway, but light poles? I mean a building you can stop short of, but light poles pretty much shutdown the airfield...

Hey Guys,
Count me in on flying together. I have long thought it would be fun to fly with a bunch of SimV-ers.
Sundays are good for me too. I fly on WSPilots and started that Hop List a couple weeks ago. But I do see others just flying where they want and ignoring the hop list. Happens all the time on the different servers. Some are even set up with No hop list, just free flight for anyone.
FSHostSpy is great to have too. Run it and see what Servers are up and running, what their format is (Hop or Free Flight) IP address and who's flying and where they are at the present time. Great little program to have.
Be looking forward to seeing some of you there. I go by 526th Fireman there too. Too hard to get rid of the old name from CFS2 Squadron days.

How about flying on someplace like IVAO, I am already a member there, it's a pretty good place to fly, with the exception that there is hardly any ATC in the USA
And I agree with ya Fozzer, I like flying the Piper Cherokees, Beech Bonanzas, and ya cant keep up with the 737's

Saturday night at 10:00 PM Eastern on WSPilots was a live ATC flight between NZCH and NZAA. Terrible weather for the departure .... thunderstorms, driving rain, wind. But nearing the destination... it was really beautiful... as can be seen in the shot above.

That would be 11pm eastern time if I'm correct, thus making it a bit late for people like me who have to work the next morning, so have fun!
I might try to get there, but I souldn't since I have to work the next day...

Well this sounds like a great idea. I think this post should be made sticky in the main FS2k4 and 2k2 forum areas so more people can read it. Now I will put in my suggestions for it:
Time: GMT with a set time of day for all.
Place: Good scenery, and an airport appropriate to the size of aircraft we will be flying, this would help controll people that want to come in with concordes and `mess things up.
Aircraft: Each week could be a different type. EG: Week 1- Small and light single engine props. Week 2- Heavy transport aircraft.
As for a server maybe we could set something up with Eskyworld or Vatsim to host a server for us once a week. What would they benifit from this? Well they would get more publicity thus have more people come and fly with them and help make this sim "As Real As It Gets" and they always do have a free flght server hosted on Eskyworld that maybe they could let us use for one day a week. Tell me what you think!
