How do I program an aircraft (Like the Harrier or Osprey) that takes off & lands vertically, hovers, but also flies normally?  ??? ???

You can't.  It's impossible.
OK, I've done it but it's STILL impossible.  Smiley

Uploading later today:
FW Triebflugel.  Vertical takeoff and landing, fly as helicopter.
Gain speed and it transitions to level flight and will reach its VNE of 600 knots in FS2002.

May work in that other sim too.  Wink

But it IS impossible unless you use helicopter flight dynamics.

so to take off vertically you have to fly the aircraft like a helicopter?

To take off vertically the aircraft has to BE a helicopter even if it looks like something else...

To make an aircraft SIMULATE vertical takeoff and landing, the flap settings must be tweaked beyond belief.

If you want to add it to your own aircraft, you could download one of those aircraft that does vertical takeoffs and copy the flaps section out of the config file, then paste into your own.  It should work just fine.

It's not impossible! Well almost anyway. You can (as Ender indicates) adjust the flap settings and tweak the engine power so that you get a very very very short take-off - usually well within the length of the aircraft. You can get a true vertical landing by again using full tweaked flaps and a modified airbrake.

I've reworked the FD of Thunderbird 1 (see my avatar) so that you get near-as-dammit vertical takeoff and true vertical landing, with a top speed of Mach 2 +....
