'Lo all!
I was channel-flipping the other day; and I saw a brief segment about some big whoppin' huge engine they were hanging off a 747. I only caught the last minute or so before it went to commercial; but it was showing the testing etc. of this monster.
Man; the SOB was
huge!
Easily twice the size of the 747's normal engines. Judging by the tests; pretty damn rugged as well.
Anyone know anything about this monster? I.e. it's name/number; specs and the like?
Thanks!

that would most likely be the GE90 test engine, its used on the 777, i believe its rated at 90,000lbs of thrust with newer ones up to 120,000lbs

WTF is that supposed to mean?
I can think of some uglier ones. Like this:
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/667161/L/
Any moment, everything can change, Feel the wind on your shoulder, For a minute, all the world can wait, Let go of your yesterday. Can you hear it calling? Can you feel it in your soul? Can you trust this longing? And take control, Fly! Open up the part of you that wants to hide away! You can shine, Forget about the reasons why you can't in life, And start to try, cause it's your time, Time to fly. - H.D., Fly

I work for Siemens-Westinghouse, and GE is our competition in industrial combustion turbines
GE is to Siemens-Westinghouse what Airbus is to Boeing..

Now that you put it that way ... let's say that GE has a better marketing arm overall. I think that the products offered by all (four) companies are quite comparable and competitive....

That's the one! Thanks, guys!
Man; when someone thought
that
one up; there must've been a whole bunch of engineers and designers all going "Me! Me! Me!" and drooling over the chance to build it.

With all respect to GE and Siemens, but my comment was more aimed at Airbus vs. Boeing

I saw that, I'm just not getting into the Airbus v Boeing argument
The analogies, though, are appropriate. All four companies - in their particular fields of competition - have good marketing departments, and good products and services. Wherever they're going head to head, it's always a toss up as to who gets the prize.

Conclusions
Not only was this comparison easy to make, but it is apparent from the figure that apples and oranges are very similar. Thus, it would appear that the comparing apples and oranges defense should no longer be considered valid. This is a somewhat startling revelation. It can be anticipated to have a dramatic effect on the strategies used in arguments and discussions in the future
