I was just wanting to see how my frames/second stack up. I average 23 when running the ATITool. I haven't looked around to compare that number to anything but I have an idea thats pretty slow.
sys. specs
OS windows xp home
powercolor, ATI Radeon, 9600pro, 256MB, 128bit, 400mghz, video card
AMD 2400 cpu @1.999 mghz (cant oc w/ my bios)
768 MB DDR RAM
266 FSB
monitor 1024x768x85hz
To conserve posting space I'll ask a nagging question here also.
To which of the above hardware devices would you attribute the problem of a 3D cube rotatating as it should but catches at intervals of about once a second? By catches i mean it seems to stop briefly then jerk like its catching up to where it should be if it had continued to rotate without stopping.

I have mine loacked @25fps so couldnt tell you. And it also depends heavily on what your flight sims graphics settings are at. I run 1600x1200 with 4xAA and 8xAF for flightsim. Only seems to drop a bit when coming into the likes of KSEA when it goes down to about 20.

Have you installed the latest version of "Direct X"...?
I think it's version 9.c at the moment...

Sounds like a software problem. Do you have any kind of monitoring software running?
What do computers and air conditioners have in common?
They both will work perfectly, until you open windows.

I have a Nvidia card so I don't know if this applies but my guess is yes.
The "Spinning cube" problem would be you video driver.
First make sure your Direct X is updated like Fozzer stated.
And see what happens I would predict that your cube will still stutter, if so then it is the video driver!
I'm almost 100% positive because I was going through a phase of trying every possible driver available to get good rates and anything newer than the 61.11 would cause the cube to stutter on my machine, so I'm keeping the 61.11.
But remember I have a Nivida card so this might not hold true for ATI.
(my disclaimer too keep from getting ransacked later on
)

Yes, the same goes for ATI cards. And if you're still having the same "tick" on a regular basis, then my guess is there is software running that's interrupting it.
This is how I found out what was causing this problem...
Open the Task Manager to the Processes tab.
One item at a time, set the priority to low.
(WARNING: Setting certian processess which operate with the OS, may cause crashing. If so, don't set that one to low again)
After changing a processes priority, check your cube again. If still "ticking" change another process. So on and so forth. I would bet it's not a OS process but something like a motherboard monitor, hard drive monitor or something which updates a display on a regular basis. A perfect example is the CPU monitor in the Task Manager.

They both will work perfectly, until you open windows.

I no longer have the tick as long as I don't use anything higher than the 61.11 drivers. In my opinion these have been the best yet offered. It seems that the drivers now are being made for games like FarCry and Doom and it also seems every new driver decreases in quaility instead of the other way around???

Also depends on what G/card you got. Its very unlikey the new Nvidia drivers will give performance boost unless you have one of the new 6000 range cards. There is no point putting on the latest drivers if you have a GF4ti4600 or somthin. As you said its more than likely gonna start messin stuff up.

Hey Savas, I cannot run mine quite maxxed on all settings
On M$ default weather settings I can these aren't to bad but if I use real WX d/loaded from the internet it can drop the FPS a fair bit.
If I just fly offline though I can hold higher settings!!
I take it your limited to 1280x1024 too due to your TFT. I run mine at 1600x1200 4xAA and 8xAF. I tried lowering the res to 1280x1024 and it made abot 1-2fps difference! I am guessing my CPU/mobo is still the bottleneck. Maybe a higher FSB/HTT would help out but I cant overclock anymore until I get new ram
Truely amazing these 6800GT's and 6800Ultras

Thanks for the ideas...
I just installed DX9c after running driver cleaner 3 successfully then I rebooted and installed the latest driver and catalyst from ATI and the "tick" continued with the cube but I don't notice it in fs9.
Incidentally, there was noticable improvement in fs9 after completing the above process.
I do have MBM5 (mother board monitor) refresh set at one second intervals.... I'll look more closely at what software and processes are running next time i open the ATI tool

Dude, only use MBM5 for mointoring stuff when your overclocking. You dont need it running whilst FS9 is going etc.
Of course leave it going if you do an overclock and want to see your CPU temps whilst gaming, but once you know your rig is stable and not getting excessive temps dont let it boot on startup you are just wasting resources.
To get the best from FS you want the absolute minimum running in the background

I recommend turning off an monitoring software as this
does
cause the pausing affect. I have some monitoring software i set it up so that it only runs if i start it, it does not run from startup.
My system:
Intel Q6600@3.6GHz, Corsair XMS2 4GB DDR2-6400 (4-4-4-12-1T) , Sapphire 7850 OC 2BG 920/5000, X-Fi Fatality, Corsair AX 750, 7 Pro x64

UPDATED 30SEP04
First off, here is how I set up FS.
POSIT: N47* 31.84' W122* 20.76'
ALT: 2000ft HDG:340 SPD:0 (I was in Slew mode)
Weather:Building Storms
Display Setting: 1600x1200x32
Everything Maxed except the following...
Ground Scenery Shadows, Sun Glare, Lens Flare, Water Effects on LOW, AA, Mip Mapping=4
Then from that posit, I took six readings of my FPS viewing FROM the Top, Bottom, Left, Right, Front and Back. Note: When changing views I cycled the Info Display to reset the Average FPS.
Here are my results...
AA=4, TemporalAA=ON, AA=Qual, TexPref & Mipmap Detail=High Qual
FPS:(FPS #s are FROM the position. IE: Looking FROM the Top down)
T=93, B=97, L=23, R=24, F=21, B=20 AVERAGE=46.2

OK OK, I post a pic of mine
Might be able to squeeze some more outta it if i return my water textures to the originals!
Skittles, I just got some new drivers for my 6800U. WHQL ones 65.73. Bumped up my 03 score another 200 points 8) Im at 13342 now WOHOOOO
I usually play FS2004 online, well today I shutdown all uneccessary things like firewall/anti-virus and I was able to run everything maxxed bar dynamic scenery (Set at dense) and 3d cloud coverage to medium (the lowest bar on the clouds tab) Seemed to handle that fine with 100%AI 1600x1200 4xAA and 8xAF.
Shame I enjoy flying online so much, and real weather always hits FPS harder than the pre-programmed weather systems.

Interesting. Are you using the default settings? The session I ran last night scored me at 5805. It may be a low number, but it's still double what I had before.

Skittles I dont think I have gained much in FS from new drivers. I am surprised yours has doubled just from a new CPU, though if it has it shows jst how much FS2004 likes FSB speeds to be as high as possible.
One very strange thing I noticed earlier was, when flying online I usually have the chatbox open. Well I had set my FPS to unlimited to take the above screeny and left it like that. If I shut the chatbox I gained about 11FPS!! I have no idea why this happens but as soon as I press enter to bring the chatbox back up I loose FPS.
You can definately get a better looking game flying offline.

Wow.. Gixer........ that is an amazing framerate.
I realize that if you get out in the ocean and away from AI and use the simple aircraft that it ups the framerates amazingly... happens on my syystem too... but that is a pretty awesome number there.
So ;;; just out of curiosity.... how much money do you have invested inj that machine to get that fantastic result?

It's not
just
a new CPU. This new CPU put my FSB from 533 to 800 and my memory from 133 to 400. It's not quite doubled. Go back and look at my updated post for my FPS.

Well, as an average, yes. but as I get closer to KSEA, with all my Ultimate Traffic on, I get about 17-22FPS. That's a whole lot better than what I used to get 9-14FPS

Yes Skittles I know you got that CPU coz of the higher FSB thats y I mentioned the above and FS2004 liking higher FSB speeds. Just looked at your CPUZ update too. I notice you have 1024 L2 cache too. That could possibly help out a bit also. I was hoping my CPU would come through and be a 'Clawhammer' which is 1024 L2 cache but I didn't get so lucky
JBarymore, well I build my own rigs and kinda update em a bit at a time. Last upgrade was the Mobo/CPU and G/card. Total cost for that was £650 (I a very good deal on the g/card!) The other bits I have had a while but I guess my whole rig (just the tower) would cost about £1000 there abouts.
Yes I took that pick in reply to ASL just to show what can be had with not much going on in the sim, and the fact I have never actually tried it before lol. Bearing in mind that at KSEA with everything maxxed bar Autogen which I set to dense and the bottom bar on the cloud tab set to medium amount of 3d clouds I hold just over 20fps. I cannot Max everything still!! not to worry my sim looks great on those settings using AA and AF with a high res so I'm not to complain. Maybe once I save up enough for my new ram and raise my HTT (FSB) up to about 440 from 400 that will help me get those last two bars maxxed!
