I was just wanting to see how my frames/second stack up. I average 23 when running the ATITool. I haven't looked around to compare that number to anything but I have an idea thats pretty slow.

sys. specs
OS windows xp home
powercolor, ATI Radeon, 9600pro, 256MB, 128bit, 400mghz, video card
AMD 2400 cpu @1.999 mghz (cant oc w/ my bios)
768 MB DDR RAM
266 FSB
monitor  1024x768x85hz

To conserve posting space I'll ask a nagging question here also.
To which of the above hardware devices would you attribute the problem of a 3D cube rotatating as it should but catches at intervals of about once a second? By catches i mean it seems to stop briefly then jerk like its catching up to where it should be if it had continued to rotate without stopping.

I have mine loacked @25fps so couldnt tell you.  And it also depends heavily on what your flight sims graphics settings are at.   I run 1600x1200 with 4xAA and 8xAF for flightsim.  Only seems to drop a bit when coming into the likes of KSEA when it goes down to about 20.

Have you installed the latest version of "Direct X"...?
I think it's version 9.c at the moment... Smiley...!

Sounds like a software problem.  Do you have any kind of monitoring software running?

I have a Nvidia card so I don't know if this applies but my guess is yes.
The "Spinning cube" problem would be you video driver.
First make sure your Direct X is updated like Fozzer stated.
And see what happens I would predict that your cube will still stutter, if so then it is the video driver!
I'm almost 100% positive because I was going through a phase of trying every possible driver available to get good rates and anything newer than the 61.11 would cause the cube to stutter on my machine, so I'm keeping the 61.11.

But remember I have a Nivida card so this might not hold true for ATI.
(my disclaimer too keep from getting ransacked later on Wink )

Yes, the same goes for ATI cards. And if you're still having the same "tick" on a regular basis, then my guess is there is software running that's interrupting it.

This is how I found out what was causing this problem...
Open the Task Manager to the Processes tab.

One item at a time, set the priority to low.
(WARNING: Setting certian processess which operate with the OS, may cause crashing. If so, don't set that one to low again)
After changing a processes priority, check your cube again. If still "ticking" change another process. So on and so forth. I would bet it's not a OS process but something like a motherboard monitor, hard drive monitor or something which updates a display on a regular basis. A perfect example is the CPU monitor in the Task Manager.

I no longer have the tick as long as I don't use anything higher than the 61.11 drivers. In my opinion these have been the best yet offered. It seems that the drivers now are being made for games like FarCry and Doom and it also seems every new driver decreases in quaility instead of the other way around???

Also depends on what G/card you got.  Its very unlikey the new Nvidia drivers will give performance boost unless you have one of the new 6000 range cards.  There is no point putting on the latest drivers if you have a GF4ti4600 or somthin.  As you said its more than likely gonna start messin stuff up.

Hey Savas, I cannot run mine quite maxxed on all settings  Sad

On M$ default weather settings I can these aren't to bad but if I use real WX d/loaded from the internet it can drop the FPS a fair bit.

If I just fly offline though I can hold higher settings!!

I take it your limited to 1280x1024 too due to your TFT.  I run mine at 1600x1200 4xAA and 8xAF.  I tried lowering the res to 1280x1024 and it made abot 1-2fps difference!  I am guessing my CPU/mobo is still the bottleneck.  Maybe a higher FSB/HTT would help out but I cant overclock anymore until I get new ram  Sad

Truely amazing these 6800GT's and 6800Ultras  Grin

Thanks for the ideas...
I just installed DX9c after running driver cleaner 3 successfully then I rebooted and installed the latest driver and catalyst from ATI and the "tick" continued with the cube but I don't notice it  in fs9.

Incidentally, there was noticable improvement  in fs9 after completing the above process.

I do have MBM5 (mother board monitor) refresh set at one second intervals.... I'll look more closely at what software and processes are running next time i open the ATI tool

Dude, only use MBM5 for mointoring stuff when your overclocking.  You dont need it running whilst FS9 is going etc.

Of course leave it going if you do an overclock and want to see your CPU temps whilst gaming, but once you know your rig is stable and not getting excessive  temps dont let it boot on startup you are just wasting resources.

To get the best from FS you want the absolute minimum running in the background  Grin

I recommend turning off an monitoring software as this does cause the pausing affect.  I have some monitoring software i set it up so that it only runs if i start it, it does not run from startup.

UPDATED 30SEP04
First off, here is how I set up FS.
POSIT: N47* 31.84'  W122* 20.76'
ALT: 2000ft  HDG:340  SPD:0 (I was in Slew mode)
Weather:Building Storms
Display Setting: 1600x1200x32
Everything Maxed except the following...
Ground Scenery Shadows, Sun Glare, Lens Flare, Water Effects on LOW, AA, Mip Mapping=4

Then from that posit, I took six readings of my FPS viewing FROM the Top, Bottom, Left, Right, Front and Back. Note: When changing views I cycled the Info Display to reset the Average FPS.

Here are my results...
AA=4, TemporalAA=ON, AA=Qual, TexPref & Mipmap Detail=High Qual

FPS:(FPS #s are FROM the position. IE: Looking FROM the Top down)
T=93, B=97, L=23, R=24, F=21, B=20  AVERAGE=46.2
