Lately, even though there are few clouds in the sky, the Jeppesen real-world weather shows it foggy and overcast Angry Tongue really a bummer when I want to fly VFR...Sad

Am I the only one who has noticed this?!

Is Jeppesen having problems with their server or something?

It is possible, i was hurricane chasing Ivan while it was at Greneda, i found the winds to be a bit weak, by this i mean i could fly a cessna 172 and it was hardly throwing me around at all.  Also the auto update screwed up for everyone in the game and refused to update for about 5 mins, it kept coming up with errors.

My system:Intel Q6600@3.6GHz, Corsair XMS2 4GB DDR2-6400 (4-4-4-12-1T) , Sapphire 7850 OC 2BG 920/5000, X-Fi Fatality, Corsair AX 750, 7 Pro x64

I tried Ivan from Grenada, Cuba and Trinidad, I got basically the same low cloud and intermittent updates. However, the turbulence was pretty good and I noticed the ASI surging up and down. I guess we can't really expect Jeppeson or MS to be perfect in a Hurricane. I just feel sorry for all those people down there. Cry

Usually when the weather outside my window doesn't match what FS9 says the weather outside my window is I just re-load the weather.  Go to the weather menu and change the weather to "real world, updated every 15 minutes".  It's probably already set there.  Even if this is already the setting clicking through this screen will re-load the weather.  The second re-load is usually much more accurate.  If that doesn't work sometimes a third reload works.

My guess is that sometimes MSFS doesn't get to speak to jessepens or doesn't get all the data in the allotted time and just uses cached data.  Clicking through the screen again refreshes the data.

BTW, I've found that real-life hurricanes sometimes produce strange weather conditions in FS.  Usually there will be patches of sunny, windless, weatherless sky scattered around in the hurricane.  I attribute this to weather stations which have gone off line (maybe they're destroyed, maybe their communications are down) and reporting no weather.

ChrisF,

I have yet to find winds over 50k in the last year+ when trying to find bad weather via live update.  Hurricanes never seem to be bad at all.  Anywhere.

Have you had luck finding them?

All I ever get is solid wind and rain..... but not anywhere NEAR hurrican force ratings.

best,

...............john

Hi, I too was trying to find ivan. I t/o from grenada, and it was very dark,  but not to bad, but after flying a bit north I started to see a wind velocity increase, so I turned into the wind and it kept going stronger until it got 99kts!!! I was flying a hawk t1 and I was all over the place, you really could see a strong effect in my flight!! If you stayed perfectly aligned against the wind and slowed dwn enough you could almost hover!!!! Shocked if you kept going facing the wind it would eventualy decrease until normal speed, so I think I could find the center of the hurricane. although it was not well simulated (as one would expect)!

but I think 99kts winds are a very good representation of real life hurricane! I think the wind velocity scale doesn't go beyond 99kts, so I don't know if that was the top speed...

but a fun flight

here is a pic Grin

My problem has more to do with FS2004 modeling an overcast IFR sky instead of a fair weather sky...

Good to know that I'm not the only one wondering what is going on...

I've seen 60kt winds.  I wonder how many weather stations remain on line (in communication with Jeseppens) when the weather gets really hairy.  Wind direction is usually spot on.

I think the "hurricane force" winds are usually concentrated close to the eye of the hurricane and most of the storm experiences these lower 50-60k winds.  The amount of time a single weather station experiences at "hurricane force" may be very small.  If Jeseppens only updates every 15 minutes you may miss these higher winds passing the weather station.

Imagine doing this in real life and hitting a spot of slower wind.  No forward momentum and suddenly now forward airspeed.  Can you say snap stall?  Hope you got some altitude working for ya...

Gotta love doing things in sim life that you'd never do in real life.  Canyon carving through Manhattan (as politically incorrect as that may be now 'days) being my favorite.

ChrisF,

Thanks... good point about the stations possibly going off-line.

In looking at the screen shot above with the 99 mph wind.........

Guess the sea surface modeling leaves something to be desired too  Wink.  Doesn't look like a storm tossed sea.

best,
