Hi Ben,
I've more or less got a similar rig to you, if I was looking to upgrade then first, swap the FX5200 for a 6800 or 6800GT from Nvidia, then, get another 512MB of RAM or, if you can wait a few weeks, go for one of the new Nvidia 6600 cards, these will cost approx $150 and will more than outperform an Ati 9800 Pro or the Nvidia 5950 Ultra - both £400 cards not too long back.

I refer you top my previous post, here. http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=hardw;action=display;num=1...
You could overclock your existing FX5200, but, you will not get a significant performance boost from this I'm afraid no matter how much you overclock it!

Pretty much, your systems ok as it is, the graphics card is ,to me, your only realistic option for a significant boost in speed.

Paul.

How can I swap my FX5200 Ultra out for a better card? Is it as easy as it sounds,  because the 6*xxx sounds pretty nice.

If you stay in the same family (ie. swap from Nvidia to Nvidia or ATI to ATI) it's just a matter of unplug one and put in the other.  If you were to go to ATI from your FX card, then you'd have to make sure you got all the Nvidia files out.  If pieces of the former cards driver remains it can affect the new cards performance.  In the past I would reformat when I switched makers, but I tried "driver cleaners" on the last two I did, and it seems to have done the trick.  On a side note though, I just upgraded to a 6800 GT and WOW.  The card is awesome.   I feel like my memory is now holding me back, so that's my next upgrade.  Good luck in whatever you decided   Wink
