Here's a few more shots I took at the "top" hangar at Shoreham yesterday. This is where I worked from 1960 to 1962. It's an idyllic location & I was sorry to leave.
The strange blue & white "biplane" is a Robin (CEA DR220) standing in front of a Piper Cub. Sussex Pad Hotel in the backgound with Lancing College chapel in the distance.
The Sussex Pad Hotel across the busy A27 bypass. The traffic is usually nose to tail & a lot different to how it was back in the Sixties. I got this shot in a quiet period when the traffic lights changed to red.
A better view of the Robin.
The original RAF blister hangar I worked in is on the left. The extension was added much later. It always looked ugly to me & I never understood why they didn't match the original structure.
One of the old characters on the airport once rode a bike along the blister hangar roof for a bet. I never figured out how they got the bike up there. He apparently won the bet.
A little home-built biplane. Anyone know what this is?
Started first time. These chaps know their stuff.
I found these hiding in the hangar. The Miles Gemini was a common sight in the Sixties. Douglas Bader often visited in the company Gemini when he worked for Shell. At least 4 were based at Shoreham but they're very rare nowadays.
Another Cub. This time the cropped wing version. Ain't she cute?

a) Nice illusion on shot 1.
b) I prefer the Gemini or that homebuilt biplane to the Cub.
c) Is that a Cirrus SR20 next to the Cub?
d) Bike on a hangar - whow!
e) Overall: interesting photos!

Thanks for the kind comments. Much appreciated.
c) It's listed as a Baker ADS MCR-01 - whatever that might be.
The owner's name is Anthony Douglas Sylvester Baker so I assume he designed it. There's a lot of these pretty little home-builts around nowadays. I thought it was a Pulsar.
PS. Don't let Ozzy see your comments on the Cub.

we all have our small local airfield. i spend most of my free time at Zoersel (EBZR). it's a NATO reserve base and used by us and a club which flies with C150, C172, Slingsby, SV4, Husky,... when the time is right, i'll take some photos there so you guys can see where i 'live'
one thing is sure, we have much more space!

I look forward to seeing them.
Maybe I should clarify why I called it the "top" hangar. It's at the north end, right across the other side of the field from the terminal & main area of operations. From the condition of the old hangar they might have to pull it down soon before it collapses.
There is talk of realigning the hard runway to allow medium sized jet airliners to operate from here. This would involve building a new main terminal on this side of the field so the hangar would be demolished anyway. Personally, I think this would be a sad day for Shoreham & completely ruin the airport I've looked upon as my second home for more than 50 years. I suppose you can't stop "progress".

good photos as always Doug.
To be honest with you, i dont think the demand is there for a jet passenger service at shoreham. Excuse my poor geography and correct me if i am wrong, but isnt the airfield, pretty close to gatwick, heathrow, and also within driving distance of southampton. Those 3 airports pretty much cover every where that could be covered at shoreham, and would be a waste of money and as you say, it would ruin the airport as it is now.

Thanks Craig. You obviously have more faith in the government than I have. LOL
The main ambition of Mr bloomin' "Two Jags" Prestcott & his cronies (pardon my French) seems to be to cover the whole of the south-east with houses & airports. It doesn't matter whether there's room or demand & practical is not a word they recognise. They recently renamed it to Shoreham (Brighton City) Airport.

Have you ever heard such a thing?
Oh, did I forget to mention that Brighton is now a city? This is the beginning of the end to my way of thinking.

Great last photo there Doug
Of course we're doing a clipped wing variant so I'm slightly biased 8)
That Miles appears to be in mint condition. Is she still flying or just in storage?

There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

Thanks Mark The Gemini is airworthy but I think the C of A has expired - if that makes sense.
???
According to the CAA records the same goes for the little yellow Cub.

Another piece of useless information. Although it's commonly known as Shoreham Airport the airport is not in Shoreham at all. As you can see from this map it's actually in Lancing.
http://www.shorehamairport.co.uk/images/street-map.gif
The airport is owned & run by Brighton, Hove & Worthing town councils. (This has recently changed as Brighton & Hove are now a city.) Confusing ain't it? LOL
This plaque inside the main terminal building commemorates its opening in 1936. The full title is the "Brighton Hove & Worthing Joint Municipal Airport". Rather grand don't you think?
Shoreham was used as an airfield long before 1936. It's the oldest operational commercial airport in the UK. The first commercial flight (in 1911) involved a consignment of light bulbs from the Sussex Pad Hotel in my photo to Hove Lawns. I think it was done as a wager. They were safely delivered.

To refine Hagar's daffynition:
They can fly, but they're not allowed to.
BTW - nice Austin-Healey in photo 1, too!

Well done Ken. You get the prize.
PS. It's listed as a (Turner) TSW-2. The owner told me it's basically a 2-seat version of the old Currie Wot.
