for pilots were nicknamed "Mae Wests" for similar reasons that the cartidge collectors on Hunters were later called "Sabrinas"
Aug 17 marks the the birthdate of the actress that lent her name to the life saving vests worn close to the chests of many a fighter pilot. (and coincidentally, purred the famous line "Why don't you come up and see me sometime?")

Thanks Felix for this important piece of information. I'm sure it will fascinate our younger readers.

life saving vests
Of course, in the RAF they would be referred to as lifejackets. A vest is an undergarment over here.

Hands up anyone who knows who Sabrina is/was. No, not the Teenage Witch.

I remember her quite well from my youth. Britain's answer to Marilyn Monroe. Wonder what happened to her. ???

There have also been two famous Italian Sabrinas, one a model/actress in the 1960s and the other that dreadful one-hit-wonder pop-starlet in the late 80's
Both well endowed

I liked Sabrina's video in the 80's...usually turned the sound down, but did like the videos.
The only girl that could make Sam Fox look deprived.

I don't remember these other Sabrinas you mention. The "bumps" on the Hunter were named after the 50s British fiim starlet from my previous link. She was quite a healthy looking girl as you can see.
Must be something about the name.

In the words of the immortal(to some anyway
) Johnny Lydon "Doug, you dirty old man you".
It took five minutes before I could stop laughing and catch my breath long enough to start typing. Not that she isn't a beautiful woman. She is. But, GEEZ, it looks like she's hiding a professional heavy weight boxer in her sweater!
.....so I loaded up the plane and moved to Middle-EEEE..........OIL..that is......
