Hi All,

I need some help from the techs out there.  I'm currently running a P4 3.06GHz HT CPU on a P4G8X Deluxe motherboard. From my understanding it's a server board. Also, I'm running PC3000 memory. This board requires PC2100.

I'm looking at the P4C800-E Deluxe. I want to keep my CPU and Mem. This new board uses PC2700 or PC3200.  What kind of performance reduction would I be looking at by using PC3000.

Thanks,

Joe

You could say there is no such thing as PC3000. It's not a standard speed.

It's probably quality overclockers RAM meant for a PC2700 equipped system. So, really, it's glorified PC2700.

That's not to say it won't run at PC3200 speed if forced in BIOS. It might, but you may have to reduce the timings a little.

You can use that RAM even at PC2700 speed until you can get a replacement.... if you need a replacement.

Unfortunately, the performance hit at the lower speed may be noticeable. This is due not only to the actual lower speed, but because the memory bus will be running at a different speed to the front side bus, and the CPU has to do an extra calculation to match them.

PC3000 is great for, say, an AMD based nForce2 mainboard with a 333mhz FSB XP CPU, and then the front side bus is overclocked, bringing the PC2700 memory up to the PC3000 clock rate. It's rated PC3000 because it handles the overclock with ease and usually at fast timings.

I have (new, from a wrong order) 1 x 512mb stick of PC3500 (DDR 433) that I might be willing to swap, depending on what your stick/sticks actually are and what you need.   PM me with details if you are interested .

Skittles,

You might have a problem there with the P4C800-E Deluxe. It's an Intel 875P  chipset, and I'm pretty sure it takes registered ram, so you better check.

An alternative would be an Intel 865 chipset (cheaper too) but I think there are better chipsets out now for the P4.

EDIT:  I just checked, this is quoted from Asus's spec:

PC3200/PC2700/PC2100 ECC/ Non-ECC DDR SDRAM memory

where non-ecc is un-registered, so it looks ok.

Here's what I'm thinking of...

Motherboard:
     P4C800-E Deluxe
Memory:
     Kingston Hyperx Series 184-Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200
PowerSupply:
     E-Power EP-450-XP-C1B
     $56

Right now with my current setup, everything is out of whack. My 3.02GHZ P4 is stuck on a 533MHz FSB. My Memory, as you know, is also slowing things down.

I need to streamline things so my CPU and MEM are running at 800MHz FSB.

I'm waiting for a thumbs up from Mike at FS-GS. But in the mean time, what do you think?
