Hi there,

nice video !

but a.. stupid question !
Why not using a spline with a lathe modifier instead ?
would save a lot of time, you have nearly the same flexibility
as a loft and you don´t need to take care of the top face.
just an idea

Sure the Lathe modifier will work. As for saving a lot of time that’s relevant to how clean you want the lathed object to be and how close the line is drawn to scale. If you choose to build with a line spline and then add a Lathe to it you will be left with double the polygon count. The Lathe will build polygons on the inside of the object too. So, now you are left with removing them by hand.

You also loose the ability to use Scale, Twist, Teeter, Bevel and Fit Deformation which are only available through a loft and aid greatly in controlling the lofted shape. You could add a FFD (Free Form Deformations) modifier to the Lathed object but then you are back to spending time adjusting it until the desired shape is obtained.

Don't get me wrong here; I am not discounting what a Lathe can do. Given the right application a Lathe would be better suited opposed to lofting. One example that comes to mind would be building a canopy for instance.

That said it's just my opinion and nothing more.  Wink

Ah I didn´think of the.. scale, twist options. True those are very helpful tools.. and probabely nosecones are sometimes
more complex than just a cone !
But one thing i do not argue. A lathe modifier does not
produce cooplanar faces !!

cheers

By the way, your multi sub object ID tutorials where great!I couldn't have managed getting the handle on texture mapping without your tuts  Smiley

It's hard to give you an answer that’s helpful because it seems you’re having trouble describing in words just what you’re doing.

Talking with your caps on to scream as well isn’t helpful to you either.

Why not post a screen capture perhaps?

Sorry, but your description of the problem along with the image still isn't clear.

What is "fast paint" anyway? I’ve never heard of that before.

Maybe someone else can assist you. It’s been my experience over the last four years that when someone attempts to work a tutorial and things don’t turn out right it’s always due to not following instructions. Maybe if you go over the lofting video again you’ll see your mistake and can learn from it.
