Hi all,

Simple question, probably been asked before......Can a 8x card be used in a 2x/4x slot?  Will it 'backwards work'  as Ram does?

Yep, most 8x cards will work in a lower speed AGP slot. My card is 8x but I have it in a 4x slot.

This brings me to a question: Can a AGP card fit into a PCI slot??

Reason being when I bought a video card FX5200 agp 4X, I remember putting it into a slot that it fit. When looking at my computer info it shows that my AGP slot is empty???
So now I'm confused (and too lazy to open the box yet to see if there is a differance) is it possible that I put my card (which by the way works great!) in the wrong slot? Or did I just figure out the most amazing FS9 tweak yet?  Grin

AGP won't fit in a PCI slot, as it has 2 levels of pins on the connector.

AGP 8x will usually work in a 4x slot... 2x can be problematic as some have a higher voltage, they were keyed in later variants but NOT in the early ones so you'll risk destroying your graphics card

What I'd like to know how higher level cards do in lower speed AGP slots. I ask this because I'm planning on getting a Geforce 6600GT. The AGP version is supposed to be comming out in October. I'm just wondering how much preformance will be lost running it in a 4x slot.

Read something somewhere that there isnt an incredible gain from 4x to 8x Iroquois anyhow.  My mates old mobo was 4x and it ran an 8x card fine.  Going by what I read I shouldn't worry to much about what your gonna loose as I think it will be negligable.

Well I opened her up and yes that is correct AGP won't fit PCI, I didn't think I could screw up something like that. I wonder why Everest is showing my AGP slot empty?

Anyway I'm running a 8x card in a 4x slot and it seems to work fine.
