I finally hit the jackpot. Look what turned up.
These shots deserve a thread to themselves. Probably the best photos I've ever taken. Specially for Mark, Roger, Kevin & all Spitfire lovers. Enjoy.
This is John Romain who owns that beautiful Spit & 2 others.
I met him later for a pint & a chat. It doesn't get any better than this.
PS. Never trust weather forecasters.

Well err because its;
a)BEAUTIFUL
b)graceful
c)deadly
d)one of the most significant pieces of British aviation history, try reading up on the Battle of Britain, without this plane and the Hurricane we Brits would all be speaking German.
e)it sounds fabulous
f)I'm involved with building a full-size flying replica
Ozzy
Ps. Doug I've just thought of a perfect word to define your day...

The Spitfire is something special. It's more than just an aircraft & part of our heritage. Also the most beautiful thing you ever did see.
Most people in this country would instantly recognise one even if they're not particularly interested in aircraft. I wish I could have just one flight in it.

I reckon you got that about right. I would probably have jumped on my camera & called it a day if these shots hadn't come out.

It just gets better. I don't know whats more drool inducing, seeing TD248 close up or chatting with the legend that is John Romain. I love this Spitfire and it's nice to see it back in its usual not-quite-authentic colour shceme.

It's a very British thing I think. Everyone else will tell you that the Mustang is the greatest Warbird ever built, but us Brits love our little Spitfire

I think there are more Spitfires flying today than for many years, thanks to the dedicated efforts of aircraft restorers like John Romain.* This page will give you some idea.
http://www.militaryairshows.co.uk/spitaw.htm
I don't know how current it is but it lists about 53 around the world. Tempest will give you the latest info.
*PS. I complimented John on his beautiful Spitfire (TD248 in my shots). His exact reply was "They're all beautiful".

That list looks about right Hagar pal. Just add to it MkIX MK959 and Tr.9 161. That makes something like 55. Oh and Seafire FR 47 VP441. That makes 56
