I've heard about tow plane add ons but I've never seen one. Usually you just have to hit "Y" and then "Q" to slew up to the height you want to start from. A product from Lago "Ultralights" was supposed to include a "Jump" module to get hang gliders up to altitude but they never finished it so their Ultralights package is a bit incomplete.

Anyone know how to locate the thermals needed to maintain extended flight in a glider? I know they are supposed to be near mountains, however, I have had no luck so far.

ACOF doesn't have thermals. For those you need add ons that give a certain area thermals for use with gliders. I think they usually come with scenery so you may want to check the SimV and AVSIM scenery sections.
