Hello folks

I downloaded some 757 American Airlines textures from Project AI and cant seem to get them to work.
I already have a 757 United Airlines plane that works fine.  I created the [fltsim.1]  section in the aircraft .cfg file. I only had the one plane in the the 757 folder,  the new AA plane would be the second.  I put the texture files in a texture folder called Texture.AAL and made texture=AAL in the [fltsim.1] section.  The plane shows up all gray (unpainted).  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Don

You want to check if the Texture is the same spec as your original Aircraft. There is variations of for example, engines and I had the same problem. Check at PAI if there is different versions of 757

Hey CapnDon,

You may wish to first check and see if the textures that you downloaded from PAI are compatible with the aircraft first.

I think that's what Magicman is referring to.  You may not know that the PAI textures will not work with the great 757 from Project Open Sky Texture set.

To find out if the Project AI Textures are compatible or not, first open the main FS 2004 Aircraft folder and look for the folder of the 757 that you are flying.  Open the Texture folder that originally came with this aircraft.  See if the files in this folder match with the Project AI Textures.

For Example:  The Posky 757 comes with about 18 different texture files labeled:

posky752vc_t.bmp
posky757fuse1_l.bmp
posky757fuse1_t.bmp

& etc.etc. (I'm not going to list all of the texture files).
Remember I said that there are about 18 texture bitmaps for the Posky 757.

Now open the folder for the Texture.AAL that you downloaded and added to your 757.

The Project AI 757 only comes with one (1) bitmap called:

7572_t.bmp

See?  They don't match.  If the two texture bitmap sets don't match then all you see when you go to the FS 2004 Aircraft Selection Screen is a gray aircraft.

My recommendation is to go here:

Download the American Airlines 757-200 from Project Opensky.  It's a really superior aircraft.  You won't be disappointed.  If the United Airlines 757 you already have is from Posky just  rename the American Airlines Texture folder from the newly downloaded aircraft to Texture.AAL then Copy/Paste it into the United 757 Aircraft folder that you already have.   You can then delete the other newly downloaded AA files.

According to your original post the Aircraft.cfg file has already been modified correctly, so you should have no problems.

Please let me know if this works.

Thanks for the replies.  I really need an education on how texture files work I guess.   Am I correct is saying that when I want to add new textures to an existing aircraft that I already have,  then the new textures must have the same name as the existing textures that are in the existing aircraft.

For example:  My exisiting aircraft has 2 textures named  B752PW_T.bmp and B757PW_L.bmp.  The new aircraft textures that I want to add are named 7572_T.bmp and 7572L.bmp.  So they want work right?

Is it just the xxx_T.bmp and xxx.L.bmp that are important here because I notice that some aircraft in addition to those files have all kinds of other  xxx.bmp files?

Absolutely correct.  In my example above I listed the bitmap files for the Posky 757.  An aircraft from another author will have differently named bitmaps.  There are no published standards for naming bitmaps.  The author just names them whatever they want.

It looks like to me in your post that you are flying an AI aircraft?  Do you have an issue with framerates or something?  The reason that I ask is because I feel that AI aircraft are great for the computer to fly, however, if you want the best realism, detail, and flight dynamics download the Project Opensky 757 (it's far superior). If you go to the link that I supplied above it already comes with the American Airlines textures Pre-packaged for it.

I guarantee that you won't be disappointed.  The Posky 757 is a sweet, sweet, bird.

If you decide to download the Project Opensky 757 please look over this recent post where I gave some more advice to "finish out" this aircraft for additional realism:
