I have a:

AMD Athlon 1.67GHz
GeForceFX5200
512MB RAM
WindowsXP Home

I know it's all very weak, but what one thing could I get that would most drastically increase my FPS? I'm willing to spend $200. I wish I could just get a whole new computer...Sad

I'm afraid its the Graphics card. Despite many people on this forum singing the praises of the FX5200 it just can't cut the mustard. Unfortunately there is not a lot of point upgrading right now to a new FX5XXXx or ATi 9XXX because they will not be able to cope with much in a short while.

If you can go for the any of the new generation cards then that would be great, otherwise I should wait until you can. If you really can't then you could go for a 9800pro but that would be a bad decision.

Sorry!

PS. If you are confident on ebay (i'm not) you may be able to pick up a cheap second hand 9800.

Buy yourself an FX 6800 GT 128MB, approx £240, it'll trounce any FX5xxx series or its ATI 9800 equivalent.

Add another 512MB of RAM and you'll be laughing.  Wink

Bear in mind that getting a 6800 will almost certainly mean upgrading your PSU aswell.  Unless what you have is already good enough, typically 500w is the minimum, although if it is high quality like an Antec or Enermax you can have 350w.

Bear in mind that 240 british pounds = $440 U.S. dollars

Quite over the $200 budget.

Umm, that's a compliment to the 5200 right?

If you are looking at an upgrade, a cost-effective option is to look at the FX5900XT (UK price is about £150.00) and then upgrade the card's BIOS; all the mags here you then end up with a card that is virtually a top range 5950Ultra!!

I dug out the body armour from the roof before writing it. I happen to think that anyone who owns an FX5200 and is happy with it has got life pretty well worked out! Unlike us suckers for high-end kit Roll Eyes
