Actually, the vast majority of Alaskan airfields
are that small. There just aren't very many large airfields up there. Most of the fields are to accommodate what we now call "bush flying" and large/long fields aren't needed. Alaska has about 1 person per square mile and they're scattered all over the state. For very many of these people the bush plane is their only means of getting somewhere in a hurry (at least AFTER you get the plane to show up). Some bush pilots have a regular route that they fly each week, others just do charter flights. For a lot of small communities in Alaska,
there is no road in! If ya wants ta visit, ya'll hev ta walk in or fly in.
