Has anybody successfully installed CFS2 on XP?  I get the infamous "error has occurred"  Details speak of ebu6b.exe.  The error occurs after I choose NEXT in the Bicycle Games Setup window.  I shutdown all other active programs including virus protection but no help.

I don't use XP myself & have very little knowledge of it. However, I know many people including members of this forum who run CFS2 happily on XP with no problem at all. This applies to all the M$ sims. I don't think your problem is with CFS2. Maybe an XP user can suggest something.

Thanks.  I already have FS2004 installed and it's working just fine.  CFS2 never gets to the point of installing.  "Calculating hard disk space" is the last message I see before the error.  I'm guessing a video or sound card incompatibility.  I'll get the info on that on my next post.

If FS9 installed with no problems I very much doubt that this is a hardware compatabilty issue. CFS2 is far less complex & had very few compatability issues that I know of. From the error message it seems more likely that this is a physical or virtual memory problem. If you have enough HD space to install the software it might be caused by something simple like a badly fragmented HD or a corrupt, dirty or scratched CD.

PS. I know that some people had problems installing FS2002 after installing a WinXP update.

I'll run diagnostics on the hard drive.  Another thought:  since I've already installed FS2004 using the Bicycle Games installation interface (what's up with that anyway??), I also suspect that, since the CFS2 is older, there might be an issue trying to run an earlier version of the BC installation SW.  I'm thinking of uninstalling the FS2004 and Bicycle Games interface completely, installing CFS2, then FS2004, which would then be an upgrade.  Any thoughts?

And what the heck is up with the De Havilland in FS2004!  It flies like a cow!

It does seem a strange name & I've never seen it mentioned anywhere before. With no knowledge of XP I assumed you simply stick the CD in the drive & install software in the usual way.

I assume you mean the DH.88 Comet. I only tried it once. It flew fine but I had problems handling it on the ground. I find this strange as taxying taildraggers was once part of my job.

PS. It's possible there's a conflict with the CFS2 installation setup program & this Bicycle Games you mention. I suggest uninstalling that. Then try installing CFS2. This might well fix the problem.

ref the DH Comet:  I'm using a new Logitech Extreme 3D joystick and I couldn't hardly keep it off the ground, esp at lower RPM.  Back stick wouldn't help in the turns or keeping the nose up.  I also agree, it was difficult to handle after landing.  But then, it's my first twin engine flight and the thing does seem to have a lot of mass/enertia.

Sorry, next time I'll post this comment to the FS2004 forum.

It's no problem. I often stray off topic myself. The Comet was a pure racing aircraft. It was designed & built in a hurry & had a bad reputation, even with the DH chief test pilot Hubert Broad. He could be rather abrupt at times & I remember reading one of his comments after ground-looping it on landing. He is reputed to have said to his co-pilot. "Right, out you get. Let's go & have a drink. Leave the bloody thing here. If they want it they can come & collect it."

You might find this interesting. http://www.pjcomputing.flyer.co.uk/comet/race.html
Quote:
What the boss thought...
The following, from de Havilland's autobiography, Sky Fever, recounts his experience of the Comet:

"[The Comet] had the first retractable undercarriage we had made, and the first variable pitch propellors we had used. We built the Comet Racer because it looked as if American aircraft might be easy winners unless something out of the ordinary was designed.

"We offered the racing Comets at a nominal figure of £5,000 each (they naturally cost us far more than this) and we had orders for three.

"Aeroplanes are seldom ready for delivery on the promised day, but this Comet had to be ready for the day of the race or all the work and time and money we put into them would be wasted. I don't think any of us would care to live again through the weeks of agony that preceded the start of the race. Economic conditions were unfavourable, the stakes were high, and we were not accustomed to gambling like this.

"Hubert Broad, our test pilot, was forced to do the work which normally lasted many months in only a few weeks, and instead of prolonged flight tests he had to limit each to ten or 15 minutes, landing frequently for a series of minor adjustments.

"By the time we arrived at Mildenhall for the start we were half dead from exhaustion, yet tremendously excited by the tension that built up during those last days."

Hope you fix the problem with CFS2. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

That was a good story. Thanks.  I'm sure I will enjoy CFS2.  I "earned my wings" on the F117A which, because of the unrealistic flying characteristics built in, provided me many hours of air-to-air combat enjoyment.  Nothing more thrilling than waxing somebody.  Looking forward to doing it the old fashioned way, without the benefit of radars and missles and such.  Just guns against guns.

Hey Indyfrogman,

Welcome to the fourm Smiley

What is the Bicycle Games installation interface?

I'm running CFS2 on XP Home, installed properly without any problems Smiley

Could this be the little rascal? http://www.microsoft.com/games/bicycle/board/
Note it's a M$ product. I reckon it's quite likely there's some sort of conflict with the CFS2 setup program. I had similar conflicts with my existing CFS2 installations when I first tried to run CFS3 & FS9. Clicking the shortcut brought up the CFS2 EULA instead of the correct ones & the PC locked solid 9 times out of 10. I finally fixed it when the No-CD patches were posted & had no trouble since.

I think it's about time that M$ sorted themselves out. Roll Eyes

It looks like it's going to install card games, but when you continue through it, the files being copied/created are for the fligh sim.  The sim installs under the Bicycle Games diretory.  Wierdest thing.  After all this discussion, I'm going to uninstall the FS2004 and try to install the CFS2 package.

Thanks for all the replies.  Looks like a good group.  Is CFS2 online capable??  If so, maybe I'll meet some of you in the skies over the Pacific.  If so, watch your six.

It's up to you but I suspect this Bicycle Games software is causing your problem, not FS2004. Get rid of that & I reckon it would fix your problem. If FS2004 (FS9) installed & runs OK I would leave well alone.

You're welcome. They're a good crowd here. Yes, you can play CFS2 online but lets get it installed & running first. Wink

The uninstall for BG looks like it's going to also remove the FS9 package, but at this point, I'm willing to do that to get at CFS2.  I'll install FS9 afterwards.

Anyone know if they ever came out with a Windows version of Stealth Fighter, the F117A sim?  I really enjoyed that one.

I can't see how that's possible. FS9 is a completely separate program. Mind you, nothing would surprise me with these conflicts with M$ products these days. Roll Eyes

What happens when you select the uninstall option for this Bicycle Games software to make you think it would uninstall FS9?

Sorry, forgot to answer Hagar's question from 7/14 3pm about the internet Bicycle Games site.  No, I don't chose the "web connection" option in the Bicycle Games setup program.  I choose the other option, the name of which I can't recall now - maybe "Install" or something.  That's when I get the error.

Haven't gotten around to retrying the install yet.

I've been reading some of the other posts, particularly about wingmen crashing. I'll admit, I'm not used to having wingmen to worry about.  I classify myself as a "purist" - the mission isn't over until I've landed successfully.  "X"-ing out after completing the assigned tasks isn't for me.  Now I have wingmen to worry about?  Is that after I've advanced in rank or is that from the get go?

In response to the Bicycle Games uninstall taking FS9 with it, I haven't actually tried that yet.  I get the impression that others did not see the Bicycle Games setup program actually being the install engine for FS9 and CFS2.  Now that I think about it, someone else in my household installed Bicycle Games from MS a long time ago.  Maybe that's why I'm seeing it as
the "defacto" install engine for these new MS games.  Is everyone else seeing a FS-ish install engine, not Bicycle Games?  If so, then I'm DEFINITELY going to lose the BG package!

I'd never heard of this Bicycle Games before you mentioned it. When you insert the CFS2 CD-1 in the drive it should auto-run with its own installation setup interface. To install it run through the instructions. This is the common method for installing most games & software.

Excellent!  Bicycle Games is outta here!!  I predict the CFS2 will install perfectly well after BG is gone.

Hi indyfrogman,

Are you running anti-virus software and anti-spyware software on your system?  If you do a fair amount of web-surfing, the internet is thick with crap right now.  Spybot and Adaware are good freeware apps that can clean out a lot of stuff people don't even know is on their machines.   Some of the stuff comes in just by visiting a website. Other stuff comes with free downloads (such as card games).

Other wise, there is no reason (other than a problem app) why MS flightsims should not work wonderfully on XP.  I have CFS, CFS2 and FS2002 all installed without any trouble.

Happy flying!

Ditto
