Sorry to sound offensive, but, advising somebody to disable their Firewall is NOT a good thing!

Firewall on - Your invisible to most hackers

Firewall off - You may as well invite them in!

You can never take internet security for granted.

I've had my machine trashed whilst playing on a "Non Firewall" server!  Cry

Stupid me!

I'd hate to see any of the guys here fall victim as I did.

I have a Hardware Router and Firewall, Hackers still have a good go from time to time!  Roll Eyes

There is a warning about  leaving yourself vulnerable if you switch your firewall off,  but sometimes in order to eliminate that as the problem you need to switch it off. If you are behind a router then a firewall is only really necessary to prevent unauthorised outgoing traffic. NAT firewalls are extremely good at keeping out unwanted casual visitors but not so good at keeping in escapees. Any serious hacker will get through most publically available firewalls. However serious hackers are more interested in getting through the firewalls of large institutions and companys.

Switch your firewall off at your own risk!!! but if you want to eliminate a possible problem that's what you need to do.

I know on the windows support site it says that the XPfirewall should automatically let FS2004 through, I don't quite believe it.

Eno,

I have my setup with Xp that lets FS2004 communicate "thru" the windows firewall.  It works fine.  I just had to add it to the list of "permitted" programs for the necessary ports.

I've tested it online on servers with port scanning....... works great.

As always..... your mileage my vary...... not available in all locations... and so on........

best,

For blokes like your old Mate Fozzer, who hasn't got Windows Service Pack 2 installed, the particular route below, to gain access to the Firewall options is not available, eg:
---------------------------------------------------
Microsoft Guide:

Note Never open a port for a program that you do not recognize.
1.    Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.    Click Security Center.
3.    Click Windows Firewall.
4.    Click the Exceptions tab.
5.    Click Add Program.
6.    Click Browse.
7.    Locate the game's executable file, and then click Open. By default, this game is installed in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\fs9.exe
8.    Click OK two times.
------------------------------------------------------
"Security Centre" does not appear in the Control Panel to gain access to the Exceptions tab/Add Program/etc.

In this case, where is the "Exceptions" tab located...?

Cheers all...!

Paul... 8)...!

Note: I just use a simple Dial-Up Modem connected direct to the land-line...no Routers, Cable, etc...!

Fozzer,

Ah
HA!
The 56 K dial up could be why you always seem to have "issues" with on line flight.  When I was on dial-up I had frequent sudden disconnects also.

When you say you don't have Service Pack II..... you ARE talking about Win XP aren't you...... not Windows 98 Second Edition?

Boy .... the security improvements with XP SPII are important... you ought to think about that one.  The one thing that will SAVE you is the dial up.  If you go broad band......... watch out.

I don;t have an XP machine WITHOUT SPII.... so I can't go look for you.  Sorry.

best,

Hi John...!
SP 2 is a definite no-no for all sorts of reasons!, apart from the fact that it is too large to download in 2 hour 56K dial-up... Shocked...!

I have no real problems with multi-player on dial-up, due to my processor and graphics card...(Frame rates 30+ locked).
The only probs were due to tracing Multiplayer hosts on the 'Net...!

Norton and Zone Alarm take care of my visitors....
...and last night's flight had them both active as well as my Windows Firewall being on...!
No problemo...!
So port 23456 on WSP worked OK...!

My system crash was due to pressing too many keys at the same time in flight...!!

Cheers...!

Paul.

...(don't ask about SP 2)...!

Not sure if this question belongs here or not as im a n00b to the site but have been playing FS as long as i can remember.  Anyways My brother and I play multiplayer through our own router and i host the game seeing as i have the better of the two computers.  Everything is fine but the only problem is when we switch to aircraft other then FS a/c.

For instance we want to fly F-16s from the keys to palm beach and we switch but it shows one another in cessna's.  How can i fix this?  Please help.

I've never played online myself but I think all players need to have the exact same version of each other's aircraft installed to their own FS. This makes sense if you think about it.
