I posted this same inquiry over on the Aircraft Design forum but will repeat it here because some folks with the answer may not look over there reqularly.

I am a new comer to Flight Sim. and I run the FS2K standard version (Not the pro).

For my first project I want to change the stock F4U-1A to a F4U-1D. They look the same (almost) so I won't have to do any graphics just yet. Easy deal yes ?

I made the changes to the aircraft .cfg file in notepad and saved the changes, but when I fly the aircraft it is not changed or if changed it is so little that you can't tell.

The SDK tells me this is to be expected and that I need to run FSEDIT to incorporate the .cfg changes into the .air file.

Where to I get FSEDIT ? I don't have the Pro version so all those neat tools aren't available to me.

Need some help with this.

Gringo6,

Do you mean FS2K or FS2k2? If FS2k then this query was in the wrong forum!

I think that the relationship between the aircraft.cfg and the .air files changed between these two sims. I only got into detailed updating of them in FS2k2 and here, the .air file is less important than the .cfg. The cfg changes are the things that the sim looks at from a fine tuning perspective when it loads a plane, so that the air file doesn't actually need to be spot-on. I set up an air file as a basic design and fine-tune the cfg file - works for me.

The FS2k cfg file is very different though. If you try to import a FS2k plane into FS2k2 (of which I have many) then the first thing you notice is that after you've run the plane in the sim, the very basic FS2k cfg file has been rebuilt with all of the elements that can be varied in the cfg file in FS2k2. This is extended even further in FS2004. So in FS2k, the air file is more important than the cfg file.

However having said all of this, don't use FSEdit! It was suplied with the Pro versions of FS2k and FS2k2 but has more bugs in it than an anthill. For amending the air file, use AirEd, available as a free download here on the site. It's pretty intuitive and makes amending the air files easy. Make backups and then have a go.

Good luck!

Yes, I meant FS2k2.

Will AirEd work on FS2k2 ?

Yes. AirEd reads all AIR files. Some entries are still unknown but that shouldn't matter.

Check out my reply in the Aircraft Design forum.
