Hi. I'm not exactly a newbie to aircraft installation, but when I tried to install new aircraft today, the computer suddenly gave me a "runtime" error message and shut down flight simulator when I tried to select the aircraft from the dropdown list. Can anyone help me? (I tried to install an Opensky aircraft and one other...never had this problem b4)

Hi newsimmer - welcome.
I've had this problem a couple of times. With me, it's happened with download planes that include a panel and associated gauges. It looks like at least one of the included gauges wasn't compatible with FS2002. If you alias the plane to a panel that you know works, this might solve it.

Also, be careful when installing gauges to FS2002. I suggest pasting the individual files into FS2002\Gauges manually. Do NOT overwrite existing files/folders if prompted. Unless you know what you're doing this could easily replace default gauges (especially the GPS gauge) with incompatible 3rd party examples.

Hi thanks for the prompt replies, but I I copied and pasted the 747 panels for the aircraft from the MFS2002 default aircraft panels. Would this still cause a problem? Furthermore, I even tried to access the aircraft without inserting a panel, but runtime error still existed. Should I reinstall MFS2002, considering I even successfully installed an aircraft 2 days ago?

Hi Newsimmer. I think this confirms the panel isn't causing the problem. I would remove the suspect aircraft & try FS2002. You can delete them or cut & paste them into another folder. If FS2002 now runs OK the problem is with one that you removed. Paste them back in one at a time & try them in the sim to find out which one. Then maybe we can figure out what the problem is.
If this doesn't work it might be best to do a full Uninstall of FS2002. This will save so much time. Use the Uninstall option from the CD then exit the setup program & delete the FS2002 root directory folder from your HD. This will completely remove FS2002 from your system. Then you can start again from scratch.
I always install new aircraft or other addons one at a time & check them out in the sim before installing a new one. This can save a lot of time tracking down problems.
PS. I just had a thought. This sounds to me like a conflict with the visual model. Make sure the aircraft you install are suitable for FS2002. Although most of them work fine some of the latest FS9 models are not compatible with FS2002. This could well explain your problem.

Yes - good point Doug. I've tried to use the Kittyhawk 737 models in FS2002 but although the program and flights seem to load normally, the visual model doesn't show up in the aircraft selector screen - nor does it show up in external view in the sim!

Thanks again. I have a specific problem with certain aircraft (many of the FS2000 aircraft do not work now for some reason; they used to when I played this game a year ago last). The error message heading is something like Runtime Microsoft C++ Library. I have tried a complete reinstallation, and this did not rectify the error. Is something possibly wrong with my computer?

Have you recently changed anything on your system, like updating to WinXP? This might have nothing to do with FS2002 directly. Try patching the MDL files of the problem aircraft with the MDL Repair Utility here.

I think this is the file that Gaztop was referring to.
Please tell me if that fixed it.

Hi, I forgot to mention that one of the first things I tried was to use the mdl repair utility, and this yielded no result.

OK. If you patched the correct MDL files that settles that. I would almost have bet money on it fixing your problem. Just as well I'm not a gambling man.
I don't like unexplained bugs. There's probably a simple explanation for all this. If you give me an example of one of these problem aircraft & tell me where to download it I can check it out myself. If you're on WinXP I can't guarantee to replicate the problem as I'm on WinMe.
PS. I can't help wondering why you're using FS2000 aircraft in FS2002. The later FS2002 aircraft are usually far better quality & have all the bells & whistles.

Could this be the problem as the [VCockpitXX] wouldnt have a reference?......as opposed to aliasing.
