"I was reading this one story about one hour from night, April 1942,at the Flying Tigers base(Kienow) they reported a strange aircraft on radar.Flt. Leader John Hampshire and a few men went up. When the met up with the aircraft they found ou tit was a American P-40, stunned they looked in the cockpit and there benith the blasted out wind sheild was a pilot whose face was a mask of blood. It was "Corn" Sherill's plane. In a last ditch effort "Corn's" base were going to bomb the japanese. He alone took on the task, and carried it out as planned. By the time he droped his ordance the Zero's on his tail and the ack-ack guns tore the plane apart. He evaded the zeros and set a course for Kienow. He died along the way..."
This is a summary of a chapter from the book "Unexplained Mysteries of WWII" .I just got this book at Borders, what a great book in my opinion Roll Eyes. So if you are intrested in mysteries in WWII then go out and buy this book.

Best I can come up with.

Basically it wasn't "radar" that alerted the AVG base, but the Chinese spotters.

Sherill flew a cannibalized P-40, with extra tanks, from the Phillipines, attacked a Japanese field in Formosa (Taiwan) and kept on going, badly hit.

When I was stationed at Basingbourne Barracks,
{This was a USAF base}We had to do guard duty, that involved patroling the disused airfield.

One night, a soldier reported seeing a; "Large green and brown painted aircraft with gun turrets, flying low over the runway" He also went on to say that there was no "wheels" on the aircraft, and it made no sound!

The guard commander, entered it in the log, and nothing was mentioned about the incident again.

Spooked me, I used to creep into the disused control tower for a smoke, when on night guard!  ???

Remember, never argue with a fool....he may be doing the same thing.

This reminds me of bizarre incident back in October 1987.  A Harrier had taken off from the factory airfield at Dunsfold on a test flight before contact was lost. It was plotted going off course & both ATC & a US C-5 Galaxy in the area repeatedly attempted to contact the pilot on all frequencies for more than 30 minutes without success. On being requested to fly alongside the Harrier & report, the Galaxy crew were astonished to find no sign of anyone aboard. It flew on quite happily & almost reached Ireland before running short of fuel & crashing into the sea. Fighters had been scrambled ready to shoot it down if it posed any sort of threat.

The mystery was solved 24 hours later when a dead pilot was found near the village of Winterbourne-Stoke,  Wiltshire. There was no sign of the canopy & ejector seat which were subsequently discovered still attached to the remains of the aircraft. It was found at the inquiry that the unfortunate pilot had been dragged through the canopy when the ejector seat drogue parachute somehow malfunctioned. This fired the drogue straight through the canopy tearing the main chute (& I suspect the unfortunate pilot) to shreds. Shocked

Unfortunately, apart from the date I can't find any reference to this terrible accident or even the poor pilot's name. Cry

I don't remember all the details but here in the U.S., several years, ago a privatly owned Lear jet flew across our country without a pilot.  I believe the crew and passengers, which included a professional golfer, had been over come by the lack of oxygen while in flight.  The jet finally crashed when it ran out of fuel.

I remember that. It was in October 1999. The Lear was on hire to pro golfer Payne Stewart who was killed in the incident. I'm not particularly interested in golf but he was one of the most popular & charismatic golfers on the circuit. Instantly recognisable in his immaculate "plus-two" outfits. A true gentleman & sportsman.

This is one of his more garish outfits. He is sadly missed.

I'm particularlty interested in golf so I continue to follow this story.  Sadly, the cause of this accident has never been determined.

As for Mr. Stewart's outfits, he had a contract with the NFL (American football) to wear "plus fours" with team colors and logos which changed depending on the tournaments' venues.  They looked ridiculous and never caught on but when you win the US Open no one laughs at you.

Mr. Stewart had the reputation of being somewhat of a jerk until the last couple of years of his life, when he embraced Christianity and became, literally, a new man.  His professional golf associates agree that he underwent a profound change and became one of the most respected players on tour.

Here's a shot of him in Miami Dolphins (GO FINS!) attire:

Some russian plane flew nearly over whole germany, with Pilots ejected, because they noticed an urgent problem. But the plane just flew straight. Sorry but i dunno more of that.

One time in Germany a Pilot had nearly run out of fuel, so that he had to throw his loadouts into a lake by Emergency-release, so he reached his home.

Someone other, a german pilot flew a Phantom, and wanted to fly over the house of his parents, but he did something wrong and just directly crashed into that house.

Someone of my family (around 55 corners or so), was in the Luftwaffe, and would have had to make flight, but he had a bad feeling, so he kept at the Base, and some other pilot flew the plane. The plane crashed and the pilot died, that was some inspiration....

I once read an article about an F-106 whose pilot lost control of the plane and ejected.  The plane made a perfect belly landing in a snow covered field and was discovered with it's engine still running.  I believe there was very little damage and the plane flew again eventually.
