I had a CD ROM my son likes to play on his computer.  It wasn't working and I noticed some circular scratches on it like maybe his CD ROM drive had scratched it.  I put the CD into my computer to see if it would work.  The game menu came up.  I had to leave for a few minutes.  When I returned there was some error message on the screen.  I don't remember what it was but when I opened the CD drive to remove the CD it was shattered into about a hundred pieces.  Has anybody seen this happen before?

A long time urban ledgend proven by the "Myth Busters". When spun up over 52X, a CD can shatter. The CD is actually spun in the drive so fast, the G forces pile up and the disc suffers catostrophic failure. It has happened before but it's not very common. Discs that have been damaged or are being used in a 56X drive are more likely to fail.

I'll bet you're right.  My CD ROM is a 48X but it had some pretty good scratches in it.  I didn't really expect the game to work but I never thought I'd see one shatter like that.

Thanks,

Jim

it has happened to me. the cloud of cusses that was above me that day was amazing. it took forever to clean up all those little pieces. I don't remember exactly how it happened. i just remember an awful noise and then the profanity began.

I've had this happen to me. It was a x58 Drive too. Unfortunatly it was Janes USAF in the drive. A game I was really enjoying too. There I was re-installing it. It started whirring. I put on ITV as instructed by Dad because the first missles were hitting Baghdad that night. I hear an awful "clunk" and the tray doesn't open...when it finally does I've got a jigsaw to complete.

I've got an MSI 52x CD/RW drive, its got a speed restriction setting, 52x speed can and does shatter cheap CD's.
