Okay, I'm not new enough to not understand that it's a Software Development Kit, but I'm still green enough to not understand what they're used for.

Could someone explain that to me while I once again embark on my journey to learn this godforsaken skill?  Thanks.

Hyperion
The SDK's are for people that use scenery design or aircraft design programs to name a few. It gives them the necassary information as to the format needed to make their programs work,
In other words if you wanted to make a weather theme if you look in the weather sdk it will tell you how to go about doing that.
Although some people read them so they can better understand how FS does what it does.
But most of the people who use them are sotware developers. As some of the information in the sdk's are quite techincal.
Hopes this helps I am not a expert on the subject but I use to be a computer programmer. 8)

Yep, that's what I was wondering.

Unfortunately, no matter which tutorials I read (and I've read most of them numerous times), I always end up stuck with either a cylinder (most recently a box) and no clue where to take it from there.

Sigh...I'll leave it up to the good guys.  I'll just fly 'em.  lol

If you mean you have a standalone that cannot be connected to the net (for any reason), there used to be a download around that would install a file (a cookie, I believe) that would allow Gmax to run without the net connection.  Try searching around for it.  I know it isn't on SimV, but I do know it exists.

Scott, there is no reason to stop with the cylinder.  Just pick a tool on the screen and apply it to the cylinder, and see what you get.  After a few bits of trial-and-error, you'll get to understand what makes a creation come to life.  Start slowly.  Don't take an aircraft that you don't know anything about.  Try rebuilding something that you have seen already and see if you can get it a little farther each try.  It isn't a race, or a contest, but a hobby.  And the more you work on a hobby, the better you become.

Hyperion, one day you'll finally finish your first aircraft
model(may be).And then you'll have millions of questions, like:how should I name aircraft parts so they are recognized by the sim,how to animate things so the animation will work in sim, wich format textures should be and how it should be named, how to export my aircraft into sim and why wheels are sinking in ground...
So all the answers to these and many others questions
you'll find in SDK's.That what SDK is used for...

When I first decided to try my hand at design, I went into it thinking "Okay this is going to take a while."

But after a year, I'd really like to think that I know more than how to build the aforementioned box and cylinder.  lol  But alas, I don't.

It's just so much easier to click once to get my plane.  lol
