I have downloaded loads of planes (6gigs!), including some brilliant ones. the other day, i thought, what would happen if you could load CFS or FS planes into FSDS? Any ideas?

Sure - you can't - (easily) - import a compiled model into a design program.

And even if you do, you still have to rename every part, redo all the animations, reassign all the textures - ... by the time you finish, you've just about rebuilt the plane itself.

mmm .. I'm not sure why you downloaded that many ..... You could never use that many if you tried ..... let alone modify a minute fraction of them in a year ....  Wink - not that you can import an aircraft into FSDS.

If you want source files to modify there are some available here - many unfinished projects too - in FSC format - & plenty more on the FFDS (Free Flight Design Studios(Shop) -see Felix's signature. Viewing files in FSDS can be a good way to learn too.
As always please make sure you also have permission & give credit where you use original designers work.  8)

You can download a MDL to DXF converter here:

It will not handle the newer (FS2002SDK and later) models, so you're left with older models, no recognizable part names, flipped polygons, no animations, no textures ...

So, if you REALLY want to mess around with an old model style, and basically use it as a backdrop image... I still think that you're better off building from scratch.

Dude i got the mdl to dfx convertor, and i did a B-36. The general shape of it worked, and i have to say that it was very accurate in shape, but it was massive. three kilometres long Shocked! So, yeah, i see what you mean about flipping polygons and stuff.

Oh, that too - the scale doesn't come out "right".

Be careful about uploading your conversions ... people would not look favorably upon that type of activity.
