Not so much a forum suggestion, but perhaps a file library suggestion.

What about a section of downloads specifically for paint kits?

Repainting is quite popular in the sim community, and as we all know, publishers frequently release all white textures of their airplanes for us to play with.

But finding them is a nightmare most of the time.  A dedicated section would be a great addition, and a sure fire way to bring more traffic to the site!

Search is fine and dandy, except that you don't always know what parameters the author has set.

For example, I could search for "paintkit", and the author may have listed it as "all white".  Search for "all white" only to find the author has listed it as "base textures".  The list is endless.  Plus, I don't always know what model I'm looking for when I'm in the painting mood.

Not as easy as it may seem.

Actually I think it's a great idea.

Then ...

The next problem is just as you say - finding the damn things! & Like you say - what are the keywords?

wouldn't it be easier to add the word Paint Kit to the descriptiond as you come across them. then the search would pick them up, it also saves the need to sort the paint kits into props, civil jets, etc

You can actually "hide" search keywords by making the font colour the same as the bg colour. Done this way you can include many search keywords without making it readily apparent, which would allow for using codes instead of actual words.

For example:
PK9 Paint Kit for FS 2004 plane
AC8 Aircraft for FS 2002
UT6.5 Utility for CFS 1

Dump a search reference on the search page and you have a standardized search system. It would even be possible to add a drop down that would have plain text search terms that would enter the search codes into the search.

There I go making suggestions for more work for Pete again...time to hide. Smiley

Sounds like a great idea... Might also encourage a few people to try their hand at repainting.

No I think what Pete means is how would HE find them to move them to the new category.

This wouldn't at all be an easy process, admittedly.  Perhaps a temporary note somewhere on the forums or the upload page asking developers to identify the files which they've uploaded that are paint kits?  Then an additional note to downloaders asking that if they DL a file, to post it somewhere in the forums letting you know?

I dunno...there's gotta be a way.  lol  I'll help any way I can. Wink

I think the best thing would be for someone to manually go through all the aircraft downloads and write down the names of all the repaint files, and then forward it onto Pete. I think this may be a several person job however!

I will do it! At least part of it anyways. I love this place and would be proud to contribute to it anyway I can.
I will start as soon as I get word saying to go ahead.
Also let me know where to send the list of files and what information is needed (Just the file names or page numbers and sections?).

Agreed.

Of course I just thought of something. This project may mean having to download every single plane on the site. I noticed that a few of the planes that I have downloaded come with a base textures folder in them. so do we list those as repaint kits? If so is there any way to tell if they have that folder without downloading them? It won't bother me either way as I have a cable connection and have no problems with speed.
Just thought I would point that out since we are seriously thinking about investing some time in this.

Grin  Yep, thats me. Just ask my wife!   Grin

Really though, we would not have to download every file. Anything that is a repaint would not have to be downloaded and texture fixes, airfile updates/tweaks.
I know it is gonna be alot of work but there is no reason to do it at all if we are not gonna get it done right.
Here is another question. Are we gonna do it for just FS9 stuff or also 2002? Personally I do not see any reason to do this for anything previous to 2002. Also what about CFS? I am really not familiar with the CFS stuff. I own CFS2 but have only played it like twice. Is there a need for this to be done for  the CFS sections? If so then no problem, I will help there too.
Just throwing some questions out there.

Well, I also have CFS2, but I rarely play it.  Maybe someone who is more active in that part of the community would be willing to do it.

We could start with FS9, then move on to 2k2...

Scott, I have almost finished the helicopter section for 2004. I picked it because it is a smaller section and thought that maybe if I actually showed that I am working on it we may get some other volunteers.
Downloading ALOT of files is time consuming and looking through them all is even worse. LOL

Anyways we should come up with a list of what sections we are going to do so that they are all covered and we are not doing the same sections. I guess I will take the helo's since I am already half done with them.

Here is a breakdown of the sections:
Civil Jets  48 pages
Props       22 pages
Military     21 pages
Helicopters   9 pages
Vintage      13 pages
Misc.      5 pages

Panels and Scenery are the only two that don't need to be gone through. Misc section is really easy since there are only a few files that need to be looked at.

Let me know what sections you want and lets get this thing started.

..& costs me $$$ ...

Most files where there is a paint kit will mention it in the description.

& also remember that many later FS2002 files will work fine in FS2004 - so the FS2004 pages are not enough to resrict this to.

There are not too many paint kits available. & in theory they shouldn't take too long to find. Generally if I saw a file included a paintkit I would add it into the description if it wasn't already mentioned ..

Thanks Smiley

Sorry Pete.
I definattly would not want to incur any extra charges on your costs.

so scrap the downloading (at least thats less work to do).

We still need to know exactly what information you will need us to send to you (If this is going to be done of course). Let us know.

Well I do think it's a good idea & as some have said may well encourage a few others to get involved in repainting.

The best thing I can think of is to think of a few search terms -

paint kit
paintkit
for repainters
base textures
.... & whatever other terms you could think a designer or painter may have used ...

& report the results. It would then be for me to harvest these & place them on the new 'Design - Repainting' (or whatever...) page ....

As always such input is invaluable & appreciated by many people - by no means least - me! Smiley

Pete do you need the full path or just the file name?

I'll start at the bottom of the 2k2 files and work towards 2k4, and I can meet Knight in the middle.

Great!

Scott, I will start at the top of 2004 section and work down. We should meet somewhere in the 2002 section since it is MASSIVE. Keep me up to date on where you are so that we know when its all done.

Rather than work your way through the pages wouldn't a search using various terms be 100 times easier? Wink - I found a few.

I also wonder if it's worth bothering with pre FSDS2/GMax aircraft??

Thanks again -

That took a long time and I now have blurred vision.
