To fly... Or not to fly?

Hey Guys,

I'm having problems setting up the background line drawings in Gmax. I've edited each one out (Top, Front and Left), but I just can't get the box to line up correctly. Is there another method/way to set up the backgrounds in Gmax?

I've been using the box method, as described in the P-38 Tutorial.

Regards,
Stratobat

Oi!  I hate the Gmax tutes!  They are almost useless, since there have been so many different ones posted that are so much better.

I would first start with the FSDS site if you haven't already tried it:

www.freeflightdesign.com

If this does not do for you, then there is a (slightly) more complicated method involving adding the templates to an actual poly in the scene.

Hey Ender Baron,

I can get the Top view to show up properly, but the Front view, when I lock the Pan/Zoom, cut's out half of the Line Drawing ???

I use the technique described by Finn Neuik in his video tutorial which used to be available.  Here is a basic approach.

Prepare your 3 views by cropping them to the length, width, height and making them same scale if possible, at least close.

In Gmax, create a box of the same dimensions of the aircraft.  Fuse length, wing span, and overall height.

Detach all the sides so you have 6 objects.

Now map each and ensure that the uvw map equals the dimensions of the 3-view to be applied.

Apply the 3 views to each side and ensure that the aircraft tips align with the edges of the sides when applied.

Now you can either convert to mesh and flip the polys of each, or, move each to the opposite position.  Right to left, left to right, top to bottom, bottom to top, front to back, back to front.

Go to properties of each and set backface cull so you can see through them from the rear.  Also, uncheck the Show gray when frozen.

Now link all the sides to the bottom or top so when you move the calibration box, all parts move together.

Then from either side or front view, set the calibration box so the main grid cross is at or near the thrust centerline or waterline or CoG, however you wish.

Freeze the 6 sides.

Now you are ready to build your aircraft.
