I have a question about the No-CD program on CFS2 misc. page 8.  Does it work?  How does it work (by copying more files from the CD)?  Are there any known bugs?

And am I the only one who has thought about using/actually used it?

EDIT:  Sorry, wrong forum.  I misread the forum discription.  Somebody can move this.

The NoCD patch is simply a replacement of the "csf2.exe" file in the main CFS2 game directory.

The original file checks to make sure the original game CD is inserted in the CDROM drive.

This is one way game developers protect the copyright on their software, ensuring you have a legitimate copy of the software.

NoCD checks, or "cracks" are written so the software runs completely from the hard disk and doesn't access the CDROM drive.

In order for the CFS2 NoCD check to work, you need to do a "Full Install" of the game, so that all required files are on the hard disk.

You then replace the cfs2.exe file with the NoCD crack (it is also called cfs2.exe and it will overwrite the original file) and VOILA! the game will run off the hard disk, saving loading and access times. Highly recommended.  Wink

If the NoCD check is written correctly by the creator - (typically a "hacker") it shouldn't cause any problems.

And, no, you aren't the first to think about or use one.

Just to give you an idea of how common this type of file is, try typing "NoCD check crack" into a google search box, but make sure your firewall is set to full before accessing any of the links, many of the sites are suspect!  Grin
