At last, a real Spitfire for CFS3 Wink. Lets take a ride with Kiwi Ace, Wing Commander Colin Grey in his Spitfire MkXIVc.
...
The Spitfire XIV cruising along looking for something to shoot!
...
I see something down there, lets take a closer look.
...
Down on the deck. This plane is superb at low altitude.
...
A spot of strafing.
...
Air to air time. Will this Spit live up to my expectations?
...
Turning into a 190A.
...
I put a few rounds into one and turn away before I run into him. I never saw the one that passed right under my nose until I took this screen shot!
...
I catch up with the first one again and finish him off. He starts trailing smoke and goes down.
...
Inspecting my “kill”. I got one other before I ran out of ammo.
...
Flacks getting heavy, time to go.

This Spit finally makes dogfighting fun again. Fast and very agile I finally have something other than the Tempest to shoot things down in. Grin

Designed as a stopgap until the arrival of the MkXVIII, the Mk XIV proved so good it remained in production until the war ended. Powered by the Rolls Royce Griffon 65 series engine driving a five bladed Rotol prop, the MkXIV was a real performance fighter. But don’t take my word for it; this is what Pete Brothers had to say:
Quote:
Although the Merlin powered Spitfires were nicer to fly from a handling point of view, the MkXIV was the real performer thanks to its Griffon engine. It was a truly impressive machine, being able to climb almost vertically – it gave many Lufftwaffe fighter pilots the shock of their lives when, having thought they had bounced you from a superior height, they were astonished to find the MkXIV climbing up to take them head-on, throttle wide open!

Grab this awesome aircraft over at AvHistory!

Hehehe. I was going to drop you a PM telling you of this bird. Grin

Nice shots. And shooting for that matter. I shall probably pick it up myself sometime in the week.

But honestly now, does it really beat using the Tempest in a dogfight?

If I'm totally honest Woody, the Tempest is far more stable and harder hitting. The Spit is faster and I found myself having to throttle back to stop myself running into my target where usually I have to fly full throttle and hit the WEP all the time. I should also add that it has the propper slipper tanks also rather than those Mustang tanks on the MkIX.

Great shots HawkerTempest5. Grin For a second I actually thought you had posted pictures of a Fairey Firefly.  Then I remembered that the Firefly wasn't the only plane with a Griffon engine.  How could I forget the Spitfire MkXIV?

Well, for the first time in about three months, I now have the desire to go fly CFS3.  Now see what you've done!  If it had a bubble canopy, I would have to excuse myself for a few weeks. Cheesy

I may re-install just for this plane but I can't decide which is better Tongue

Merlin engines make your ears melt with that great sound but they don't have that gritty powerfull roar as they tear over you head at high speed  Roll Eyes

Great shots

Yeah, they do. I know I go on about it. Sometimes I think I forget it's just a sim. It's the Warbird enthusiast in me talking I think.
(P.S. I didn't mention that the MkXIV shouldn't have a solid arial mast did I Wink)
