I have recently uninstalled winrar and now I have a problem. Every time I try to open a zip file I get a box that pops up saying it is unable to find winrar.exe and it asks for another program to use. I am running Win XP and it has support for opening zip files without useing any other program. How do I get this feature back. I have contacted the maker of winrar and they said once winrar is uninstalled everything should be back to normal. WRONG!
Microsoft has not returned any of my 20+ emails and I have pretty much given up hope on them (I know, big suprise right?).
If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin it sounds like you made winrar the default file compression program on your machine. Run Winzip and look through the help page about making it the default. This should cure the problem Wink

Mark

Ps. Its been ages since I had to do something like this so I can't remember exactly how its done, but its a known issue with XP Roll Eyes

You should be able to associate zipfiles with whatever program you wish to open them. In Windows Explorer right-click on any zipfile & select "Open With". Choose the program from the list. Check the "Always use this program ......." box before clicking OK.

I have no knowledge of WinXP but this works in every other version of Windows I've used. I would recommend using WinZip rather than the XP default unzipper. To unzip files I always use the right-click WinZip options.
Right-click on any zipfile & select the "Extract to folder C:\Blah\Blah" option from the drop-down menu. Quick, simple & automatic. Works every time. Wink

I use winzip on some files and WinRar on others. I have disabled the built in zip program. When zipping up files or creating spanned zip files, I have found time wise and compression wise that WinRar is better.

I have a question here...

If I zip something up using the default zipper in Win XP, will a person using Win 98/ Me/ 2000 be able to open the zip file using Winzip?

Regards,
Stratobat

Thanks for the replies!
Hagar, your reply was exactly what I needed. Worked perfectly. It is amazing that I can come here and get the answers that I need and the companies that make these programs can't tell you anything. Once again I am reminded why I come here every day.
Thanks,

Kevin
