...after the problems of running out of memory with my programs in Win '98SE...
I just had a word today with my PC retail guru, (he who knows about everything PC related... Grin...), with reference to installing more than 512 Mb of memory in Win '98SE...
"No problemo with 768 Mb of memory", he says, "..but don't install 1 giga-byte, 'cos the puter won't recognise it".... Wink...!
So...
I thrust £46 into his eager hand for another 256 Mb stick of PC 2700, (166 Mhz), DDR SDRAM... Shocked...!
Plugged it in...
No more problems with running out of RAM resulting in stuttering programs... Grin...!
Happy bunny...8)...!
Empty pocket... Cry...!

Cheers all... Grin...!

Paul.

P.S. Windows '98SE doesn't seem to be very efficient in managing memory..... Cry...!
Also, shutting down background programs made very little effect in conserving memory, most of them are quite small in relation to total memory... Shocked...!
Most of the memory is taken up by the complete installation and running of the flight simulators... Wink...!

As an observation, my old MOBO ASUS A7A266 did not use the additional 512 MB RAM installed.  My new MOBO DFI NFII 400-AL does use a portion of the additional 512 MB RAM.  Could usage be related to the chipset nForce2?

I was using an ECS K7S5A, then a Asus A7S333. Both were SIS chipsets. (both were slow in comparison to comparable specs as well)

In terms of performance in FS9, what has a greater impact?  Vid card on-board ram or system ram?  I noticed after upgrading to XP on my 2.09 athlon that the 512meg i had been using on my old p3 800 wasn't rendering FS2002 as smoothly on the faster XP system as it had on my slower 98 system.  So, I added another 256meg and now have very fluid performance with FS2002 save for a few notable planes such as the 747rfp.  That tends to be a tad mushy in Vcockput view.  Now, I am running FS9 and while it works in a usable manner it does tend to much up a bit in the Vcockpit view ot whenever there is weather being rendered.  So, I am wondering, upgrade the vid card from 64meg ati7200 to a 128meg 9800 or break the 1 gig barrier in ram?  What do you all say?

The graphics card, by far.  I was using a Radeon 7000 32MB before, this allowed low settings with a few at medium, i upgraded to a 9600xt and can run FS9 maxed out, 30FPS locked.

Avoid the ram misconception, it's not a be all - end all cure, whether in system or on the video card.

With system ram, there has to be enough so the system doesn't get bottlenecked waiting to take it's turn for memory space, it's that simple.

A video card's ulimate power is determined by it's GPU or Graphics Processing Unit (the graphics chip). The GPU types are named like GeForce4, FX5200, Radeon 9800XT etc.

The amount of ram on a video card must be adequate to handle the GPU's output. Extra ram on the video card may make sales in the shops, but it doesn't get utilised unless the rest of the system supports it.

More important for the video card, (after primarily considering the GPU type) is the quality (ie. speed) of the installed ram. High quality video cards have a special type of very expensive and very fast ram onboard. Poorer types of cards, (and this can apply to high spec GPU's) have cheaper and slower ram onboard.

In other words, the amount of ram on a video card is not really the primary consideration. It has less of an effect than one might first percieve.

It bugs me when I ask about what video card someone has and they immediately say something like, "It's a 128mb", blissfully ignorant of their hardware, it's then a bit of a job to explain the finer points, so....pass the word all!  8)

Hi Birdman...!
Thanks for this little beauty....

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

It works a treat and allows me to select which programs I want to load at "Start up"...(the list always seems to get longer by the minute... Shocked....)...LOL...!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
As a matter of interest, whenever I manually shut down programs running in the back-ground, (Ctrl+Alt+Delete), I always leave "Explorer" and "Systray" running.
What actually are these two programs, and can they also be shut down, or are they vital for Windows to work...?

Cheers all... Grin....!

Paul.

P.S. I've just been presented with a sooper-dooper Phillips 17 inch 170C4 LCD flat screen monitor... 8)...!
...arn't I a lucky bunny... Grin...!
(I can see the text on the screen clearly now...)... Grin...!
I could take a photo of it, and post it here, but I'm not the sort of person to inflict pain upon others... Wink...!
LOL...LOL...LOL...!

I was risking getting a hernia lumping my old 17 inch CRT monitor around... Cry...!
LOL...!

Explorer is very vital, trying to close that will only bring up the shutdown, Restart, etc... menu.  Shutting down systray can make the system unstable, sometimes it does not , but other times it can cause a crash either straight away or later on.  It uses minimal resources so i would keep it on for stability.

Fozzer,

Now, I'm started to get jealous!  Undecided   Presented indeed! Was there a ceremony?  Grin

I just noticed your spec Paul....... says FSB is 400mhz.

And You are running an XP2600+, Is the system bus and CPU really running at 400mhz or is it just your RAM at 400mhz? But you have PC2700 Ram @ 333mhz? Oh my, I hope it's not my medication again!  ???

You can download WCPUID to check. (oh, and I did get that 284mb of WinXP Service Pack2 on my dialup, LOL, only took two days!  Tongue)

Hi congo... Grin...!

Have a shufty at this...

...

What do you reckon...?

Cheers Mate... Grin...!

Paul.

..ceremony...?....4 packs of Castlemain XXXX.... Wink...!
LOL...!

P.S. 400 Mhz is the maximium bus speed for my particular Gigabyte motherboard, I think it limits me to a 2.8 Mhz AMD processor... Wink...!

Thanks for that Paul, and the fancy new WCPUID as well!   Wink

Same as my CPU. We can go to XP3200+ m8, no worries, and they are getting cheaper all the time! Grin

But...... We would need to upgrade our Ram to PC3200 400mhz to make it really crank. Someday........... 8)

They make that XXXX across the street from where I buy my PC gear! My favourite drop actually.
