Whilst it may not have been the most glamorous of aircraft, the Supermarine Walrus still made a major contribution to the Allied war effort and saved the lives of many downed airmen.
...
Dawn patrol.
...
Coming to the rescue, the Walrus comes in for a water landing.
...
Splash down.
...
All at sea.
...
Take off.
...
With the airmen aboard, the Walrus turns for home.
...
...
Heading along the South coast of England.
...
Hard landing, over the runway.
...
Truly Amphibious! The Walrus on the tarmac.

Most people associate the names R. J. Mitchell and Supermarine with the Spitfire, but long before his fighter was winning the battle for the skies over Europe, Mitchell and Supermarine were famous for building seaplanes.
Obsolete, underpowered and often unarmed, the Walrus put itself in harms way, often under enemy fire and on heavy seas, to rescue downed airmen at sea. A true Unsung Hero.

Myself...I like Bi-planes and Tri-planes, rag and tube.

hmm probably the most ugliest aircraft i have ever seen but if it does the job better because of that then its a great aircraft

What an ugly aircraft......but I wouldn't care about its look if it came and saved me from the cold and rough Atlantic ocean.

The good old Walrus. Never seen one myself but they were operated from my local airport during WWII. Strangely enough I was chatting to an old friend I bumped into at Shoreham this morning - told me he had his first flight in one when he was in the A.T.C.* He had to leave before I could ask what it was like.

*This must have been some time ago as he's older than Fozzer.

So that would make the good old Walrus older than the Wright Flyer Wink
Hagar old chap, I think there is a Walrus at Hendon. Or is that a Seagull ???

Same thing. The Walrus was originally named the Seagull V.

I've seen them in museums but never in their element. This would be quite a sight. Wish I'd been there. Shocked Wink
