The Master was the British equivalent of the Harvard although it was a completely independent design. It was developed from the famous Hawk series of trainers & racing aircraft. The Miles brothers & Fred's wife Blossom were extremely talented designers & came up with many revolutionary ideas.
Unfortunately they often upset the "authorities" & did not achieve the success they deserved. One reason that examples of the Miles classics are so rare these days is that they were mostly of wooden construction. Here's a list of their more well-known types although many others never left the drawing board.

PS. F.G. Miles (he was always known as FG) also set up Miles Electronics that later went into partnership with Link (Singer Link). Link-Miles was closely involved with the development of the modern flight simulator. This company (taken over by Thomson? ) is now based in the old Rediffusion Simulation factory at Crawley.
PPS. This is the Miles M.20 (Emergency 12-gun fighter.) Using as many Master parts as possible it went from drawing board to first flight in 9 weeks. The M.20 had fixed gear & was faster than the Hurricane. By this time the BoB was almost over & it never went into production.
