Morning SimV'ers! Sorry for the delay on this week's leg, but with the forum crash on Saturday I couldn't post. I have no school today (teacher conference!!!
) so todays as good a day as any to do this.
In our last installment, I had flown from late afternoon to early night across Morocco and parts of Algeria to destinations unknown......
The next morning I woke early to start the day. Before nightfall I wanted to be in Egypt. As it turned out, I wound up in Algiers, Algeria the night before.
It was about 8 o-clock in the morning and the sun was still rising over the coastal mountains to the southeast. The weather report called for another beautiful North African day... Relatively warm, clear skies, and very light winds.
Well, I didn't want to waste any more time, so I started Peggy up and taxied to the active.
I called the tower and got permission to take off, and I was up in the air.
For two hours I flew past mountains, deserts, and, believe it or not, farmland! And then I crossed the border into Tunisia, and what used to be Carthage, the ancient North African civilization that rivialed Rome in the Mediterranean.
I found myself in Tunis, the Tunisian capital. It wasn't much of a city but it bosted an airport, and I decided to land.
I tuned to Carthage tower and got permission to land at runway 11. I lined myself up and started my checks. The runway drifted below me, I cut the throttle and flared.
I was a little fast and Peggy's tires started to scream and smoke.
I taxied to the pumps to top off my tanks. In a few minutes I would be setting off for Libya.
In our next eddition, its just a short hop to Libya and then on eastward.
