Could someone explain to me why Americans and Europeans ( recently) are so into those huge SUV's?
Where's the common sence? Huge trucks, huge engines, huge petrol consumation, high prices for tires...
And all that to roam nice highways ( at least here in Europe).
I just don't understand it. What happend to the nice and elegant berline?

once upon a time suv's were actually for off road work and fun. As they advanced so did the look of them, they got nicer and famous people decided they wanted to own them as a sign of status, as hey bought them, the general public followed suit, and bought them, as a sign of their status,(much like BMW's Mercs and so on) problem is much like BMW's they have become very common as prices have come down. Now they are no longer as high a status symbol, and i dont even think most can go off road even slightly
so the world is then left with many SUV's clogging up the small roads, causing serious pollution, and generally causing a problem.

Right, there was a show on belgian television, called Peking express. 6 couples hitch-hike from Moskou to Peking. Along the road they could race with Ural-trucks! Now THATS what i call a 4x4!
Nice to see there are some people around who share my idea about those ridiculous vehicles!

We have large SUV's but that is because we have a family of 6 and things like horse trailers to tow. I personaly detest cars, I couldn't see myself driving a car. An SUV is more usefull, durable, safer, and easier to use. I guarantee when you hit an elk or a deer, or whatever you guys have in Europe, you are going to be wishing you were in an SUV than a car.
Where I'm from,
nobody
drives a car except for the little old ladies.
If someone can afford to put gas in it than why are you knocking them?

Lets put this straight. If you hit an elk in any sort of vehicle your going to wish you hadn't. A two ton elk is going to decimate anything short of a tank if you hit it.
As to SUV's being safer, this is a load of rubbish. No vehicle is easier to flip over than an SUV. When people drive them they think they're invinicible, so they drive recklessly, and so they're more likely to have an accident. Modern SUV's are not made of the same stuff as the old Jeeps and Land Rovers. They are not nearly so durable and safe either.
Personally I believe that the only true off roading vehicle in production today is the Land Rover Defender. And even these arn't as good as their forebearers. All these American SUV's are just oversized gas guzzling excuses for a 4x4.

useful in the sense of towing and cargo space, I can see, but majority of vehicles seem to be on the same level of safety, durablility, and ease of use.
some people (at least in N. Indiana) have a false sense of security while driving in slick winter conditions with SUV 4wd, ulimited traction wow!,
but aint it a shocking experience when they start sliding when slowing for a red light.
I really don't have any beef with people who actually use their SUV, but if you have it just for mostly driving solo, cruising the hood' for chixorz, and generally for having a bigger vehicle to compensate for something
,
I hate dealing with these almost tank sized vehicles and rice racers also,
, but I cant type anymore right now taking a break

Yeah well thats G.B., I wouldn't want to drive one there either. right now it's a $1.77 for unleaded, even less for the diesel our truck takes, so "
Frankly my dear, I don't give a damm"
if my truck sucks gas.

You answer me this: head on collision between a sedan and a Suburban, or even a small SUV Vs our Ford F-350. Who is going to come out the winner, or better off than the other?
He he, just wait a month till we have bash bars on it too......
Woodlouse,
You will be wishing

Yes I will admit that SOME drivers of SUV's drive stupid. BUT, I've seen plenty of morons in cars doing things every bit as stupid and ofter dumber. THere are plenty of a**holes in sports cars, and normal cars, that defy the laws of retardedness and stupidity.

If that were true than the U.S. military wouldnt drive Chevy SUV's and hummers now would they.
Frankly after listening to you for a month or so now Woodie, you sound like you simply don't like anything that comes from the states.

Personally I don't really understand it myself. SUVs don't seen to be that useful except for hauling a lot of people-they are a good vehicle for larger families.
Other than that-they seem pretty useless. I can't image myself buying one anytime soon (Perhaps thats why I own 2 Camaros).

Yes, that is a
car
, an suv has more of a chance of stopping it at the bumper and grill rather than the front seat.

Ok, toutchy subject!
I have no bad feeling towards SUV's perse, if you use them the right way.
Here in Belgium i just can't see the point off them, unless you need to drive around with horses or if you're a construction worker.
But, most of the SUV-drivers in Belgium are show-offs, never comming close to off-road driving! So why would one need such a car under those circumstances. And about feeling safe in a SUV - in case of an accident - think about the people in the other car who get slammed by a 2 ton truck. Not a nice thought!
Here the are overpriced, expensive to drive, and annoying when they drive in front of me!

No, I don't see the point there either. I think it is just a vehicle trend buddy. In the 60's it was the muscle cars, in the 70's it was the station wagons, now its the SUV's. in a decade or so everyone in the city's will go back to cars or some other nonsense, and you won't have any worries.
I keep desperately hoping that this trend with young people "pimping out" their worthless Honda's and Acura's will go away soon.....

If for myself am looking forward to my own little Nissan Micra, with which I won't have any problems finding a parking lot in the german city centres, compared with those guys in their huge SUVs. If I ever see one of them trying to find a parking lot, which is big enough for his SUV,I'll be constantly laughing at him...(I know I'm mean)

Corvette's aren't really muscle cars though. They're more of a sports car. The muscle car was more of a cheaper car which wasn't 2 seats, and was fast (but its one of those things that everyones definition is a little different). To me, muscle cars are:
Camaro's
, Chargers, Challegers, GTOs, Road Runniers, Chevelle's, GTXs, Baracudas, and other cars of simular types. Personally, I'm not a big Corvette fan either-I like some of the early ones (57, 67, & 69) but those are so expensive its crazy.

Yeah, so? Do you have a problem with that? In the same fashion you take pride in your Volkswagons and Beamer's, we take pride in ours, and as most nations prefer, do as much ourselves as we can.
Quote:

Yes,....... I don't follow as to what is wrong, or what you
think
is wrong, with that. They are supposed to be able to go anywhere a tank is. Do you have any idea how much easier it makes war planning to have a support and secondary infanty force with TOW's and macine guns that is just as moblie as the tanks? I am going to take it, if you don't like hummers than you also don't like Stryker's either. Just because your country has yet to crank out something as mobile and durable, doesn't mean you need to hate ours.

Yes, it's certainly a German company.* Our friends across the pond often think of Europe as one country. You might be interested in the topic I just posted in the History forum. Tribute to British officer who saved Volkswagen.

*PS. Most British car companies are now either French, German or US owned - even famous names like Rolls-Royce, Bentley & Jaguar. Bentley Motors is now owned by Volkswagen. Ironic ain't it.

You answer me this: head on collision between a sedan and a Suburban, or even a small SUV Vs our Ford F-350. Who is going to come out the winner, or better off than the other?
He he, just wait a month till we have bash bars on it too......
both vehicles would take considerable damage depending on speed, but no one wins if someone dies

Note the phrase "better off than the other". If I hit someone in our F-350 with bash bars driving anything less than another large truck or suv, they are going to be
gone
.
We do not think of Europe as all one country.
Yes, once you start going over past Poland and Switzerland it will start blending together for most Americans, but we know where everything is west of there.

To put it all in perspective and to put it bluntly a car is a car is a car ....... It gets you from A-B hopefully safely. Whatever car anyone chooses to drive is irrelivent as long as its driven well.
Just to add to the off road debate the Russians and Austrians make/made the best off road vehicles.
Lada's (even the saloons) where built to handle conditions that some tanks would be sruggling in.
and the Austrian contender is the Pinhauser ... mostly used in specialist areas such as Mountain rescue and occasionally seen @ airports as part of the fire department.

Actually, the Hummer is not nearly as mobile as a tank. Just because it's as wide as a tank it doesn't mean it can go anywhere a tank can. All it means is it can go to most places a tank has been. And i'm afraid to say, that is nowhere that a Defender can't go.
And as for the durability, LandRover made 1.7 million series I, II and III landrovers. Over 70% of those vehicles are still on the roads. And they were all built between 1950 and 1980. For durability you can't beat one of those.

the only thing that I've heard about Hummer's getting stuck in is snow, the driver got it into deep snow and just spun the tires and it ended up sitting on the chassis.....
anyways...you guys are completely forgetting something.....

Come to think of it, we don't need to either. We can, and often do, simply buy the engineers out and have them come over here and create whatever we need under a U.S. name that will be every bit as good as theirs.

I wouldn't say that....America honestly builds some of the worst motorcycles in the world. Yamaha, Ducati, Aprilia, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda, Triumph are imported. Some of our airlines (delta, iirc) buy Airbus.....Im not big on my airline aircraft but arent the CRJs Brazilian? Coast Guard buys Augustas (italian?) and Aerospatiale. My Nikon N70 (Japan). Playstation. Diamonds (majority of em) cars, some video games, stereos, video camera, tons of electrical junk..... as I think of the imports I'll post more....

We dont have a stock 350. It belonged to a rodeo bronc rider who used it to pull his tripple axle horse trailer and had every thing imaginable added to it including a chip for the engine and had the chassis reinforced as well. I am going to fare better a than the other guy in an accident guaranteed.

I also have another picture, a little more serious than the above that would help illustrate lighter vehicle doing sever damage and probably killing the occupants in a vehicle 4-maybe 6 times the weight of it.

I suppose its ok since there isnt any blood or remains of bodies in it, I keep pictures like these as a reminder of what happens when I get myself into machines.........
keep in mind, the modern day sports bike weighs in roughly at 380lbs + rider, not sure how much the car weighs...but still considerably more than the bike.
I also have a video of a motorcycle rearending a parked car, the bike lifted the whole rear end of the car off the ground and decimated the whole trunk..

Not sure about all this rubbish about the Defender being better than the Hummer. The Hummer can go anywhere, decimate anything in its path, and to roll one you would need a huge incline.

I think not!

Right, there was a show on belgian television, called Peking express. 6 couples hitch-hike from Moskou to Peking. Along the road they could race with Ural-trucks! Now THATS what i call a 4x4!
Nice to see there are some people around who share my idea about those ridiculous vehicles!
Those Ural trucks are 6x6, have a
11 litre
V8, and are the ideal base for offroad campervans. One problem... they eat diesel fuel like it's water. 1:3 for the latest variant, 1:1 or worse for the older engine model.
