hi there, I have one simple question that if resolved would be of great help to everyone that like me loves carrier ops! I fly harriers and have an uk carrier, BUT, standard approache in the harriers is a paralel one and then sideways to the deck! this cannot be achieved without the hoover maneuver, but as in real life, harriers cannot really hoover, they can go at a minimum of 15-17kts! so it's impossible to make the approache correct, unless you have straight at you wind of about 16kts,or as in real life the carrier is going at 16 -20 kts wich makes you hoover in relation to the carrier deck! in Fs with real weather you depend on where the wind comes from, and since the carrier is allways stoped it's impossible to hoover and make that manouver! so my question is:
is it possible to do the carrier as an AI plane, make it follow a flight plan at sea level and at the same time have a hard deck where one could land?
if anyone could achieve this I think everyone in fs comunity that likes carriers would be VERY thankfull:D

You could make the carrier an AI aircraft, but aircraft in FS can't have landable surfaces on them. Conversely, you could use dynamic scenery stuff to make it move, but that is far beyond my knowledge. Since it hasn't already been done, it makes me wonder if it is possible at all. You might just have the same problems as the AI stuff.

Not possible, as far as I know. FS just doesn't support this function.

The real Harrier can hover. It can also fly backwards. If the FS Harriers are based on helo flight dynamics they should be able to do the same.

If it's possible to have more than one hardened surface you could create an angled deck with several overlapping small squares.

you're right hagar, my mistake it's true they really can hoover, pending on fuel, etc,but not in fs, at least none that I know of, but if there is one I would really like to see it:)
as for the flight dynamics, harriers in fs are not based in helo's they work by having VERY strong flaps, that make them fly at veeery low speeds! so we need to add horizontal drag to make them hoover, anyone knows how?
one way that it could work would be to associate thrust and flaps!meaning: make fs recognize the engines as being attached to the flaps, that way it may work, but is it possible?
the problem is I'm an absolute newbie regarding air file editing!I just have the ideas...
in any case I'll try to mess with the air file to see what I can get!

Saddly, it isn't possible. FS doesn't recognize attachment of aircraft parts to each other.

this is getting dificult
why don't microsoft tyhink of those things ???
hmm, and what about the thrust angle itself?is it possible to change it?

The FS flight model was never intended for an aircraft like the Harrier. Maybe you're approaching this in the wrong way. I've not tried it in FS9 but I used to be able to land a Harrier on the carriers in FS2002 with no problem. It just takes a little practice.

I too can land in the carriers without much trouble but the aproache in uk carriers is not a direct one. and I was just trying to do that maneuver.
this is how the approache is:)

I understand that you would like it more realistic. Bear in mind that in real life the carrier would be steaming into wind. As you pointed out in your original topic, this is not possible in FS. The carrier is stationary & the heading is fixed.
I always thought it was a pity they didn't include the CFS2 Ships feature in FS2002/4. This is the Fox Four CFS2 fleet, specially created for forthcoming campaigns. The ships move independently, pitch up & down in the swell & the carrier is landable.
PS. Unfortunately they're not compatible with FS.

man that would be great:) another hipothesis I thought of:
you know the little orange thing you have in airports that moves accordingly to wind? the triangle thing (don't know how you call it in english
). well if you have this it means that fs has somewhere an instrucion that recognizes the wind direction and makes that particular object be allways pointed to the wind!
So, could it be possible to put that intruccion in a carrier? of course if you could do that you would have the risk of almost being on deck and then it sudently would move it's directio
lol but it would be a start...

I think you mean a windsock. This should be possible but I don't pretend to be a scenery designer. I think it would come under dynamic scenery objects. You might like to check out FS Regen.

I've never used FS Regen & it's no longer updated. There might be a lot more information in the latest FS9 SDKs. Again, I haven't read them.
